: Senior project = *A+*
webilt 06-16-2003, 09:05 PM my friends son Jacob had to do a senior project to complete high school,, he decided to build up a Toyota,, so in late Janurary the project started,, (had to be completed by end of school in 1st part of June),, I sold him a 1987 rolled extra cab 4wd complete truck, and a clean 1985 extra cab/bed
he did all the work himself,, (I was his mentor)a requirement for the project,, he completed the project 2 weeks ahead of schedule,
and recieved an A ( and also recieved a $1000.00 check from a local welding shop, he was nominated for it by his welding teacher) ,
not bad for a 17 year old,!! :)
specs:
1987 frame,
1985 cab
all rewired to the 87 engine
22r engine
G-52 tranny
triple t-cases (2.28s)
Dana 44 3/4 ton Chevy front axle (narrowed 2.25"s on longside)
Dana 60 3/4 ton Dodge rear FF axle
589s
ARB's
16x38.5x15 TSLs
15x10 8-lug 2.5"backspace wheels
Chevy springs in back with double/swing shackles
modified 2.5" lift YJs up front
custom crossmember
3" indexed tranny hump (inside)
custom sliders
the pic's are from his 2nd time out, (Marlin Round-up weekend on the Con)
the 1st pic shows him next to a rock, (he is over 6' tall),!!
;)
Yota Krawler 06-16-2003, 09:08 PM wow... but i must ask, why go with 3 t cases instead of 2 with 4.7's in the rear it would be stronger and close to the same gearing?
webilt 06-16-2003, 09:09 PM :)
big4294x4 06-16-2003, 09:09 PM I wish I had the $$$ to do that. Just jealous. That is badass. Even more badass is a school that requires a senior project of that calliber to graduate.
man thats too kewl, i wish we had senior projects like that at our school, all we got to do was book work.
webilt 06-16-2003, 09:13 PM he went with 3,, to be different,, and the "why" factor,!!
Booger Weldz 06-16-2003, 09:17 PM your son has a better rig than most of us:flipoff2: :D
congrats jacob!:D

i was denying it but its true!!!;)
webilt 06-16-2003, 09:24 PM here is a pic of his 1st truck,, Jacob, his dad Chris, and myself built for him when he was 15,, he rolled it last year in the lil sluice, and parted it out to fund most of his senior project,,
It's great to catch them when they are young, and help stray them away from the Honda's and Mitsu's :D
Toyofast 06-16-2003, 09:26 PM He must have a kick-ass after school job...or parents willing to donate to the cause freely.
Looks sweet....
....but it seems that with all that work there looks to be a 4" block in the rear, what's up with that?
sickfab 06-16-2003, 09:42 PM I wish more high school kids had his ambitions and morals.(I mean, he wheels, and a toyota at that!)

the chevy's are just a temp spring, and the 4" blocks are to just level it out,, and he keeps the u-bolts torqued to 100 ft lbs,,
he is patiently waiting for his AOR rears (for about 4 months now,!!)
Storm Trooper 06-16-2003, 09:50 PM The senior projects are standarized thing in that area, most people learn how to build a kite or some dumb shit, every once in a while you get a cool dude like jacob and they do something different, that guy has some serious welding skillz (my rig has held up just fine) and as far as I know he funded the entire project himself, i know he was busting his ass long before he even got his license to pay for the first rig. Jamie tell him I said hi and that the rig is looking sick. When does chris get back? :trooper:

I'll let him know,
Chris should (hopefully) be returning July 5th, and he wants to hit the Con, ASAP.!!;)
Storm Trooper 06-16-2003, 09:59 PM hmmm, my 60s and tube work sould be done around then to;)
Ben Holloway 06-16-2003, 10:03 PM thats pretty nice, i think you guys dont give the young people any credit there are alot of us out here all the people i wheel with arent over 25, but my senior year i didnt have anything near that cool
Ben
Storm Trooper 06-16-2003, 10:09 PM did he shorten the long side to keep from haveing to machine a flat spot on to the housing, yet still be able to center it? If not do you have any closer pics of this area?

yes he did, im in the process of this same thing right now check http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/ looks on his d-44 page
Ben
webilt 06-16-2003, 10:17 PM he shortened it to be able to run stock length axles on both sides in front,, by narrowing the longside 2.25"s he now can run a Ford F-150 D44 front longside axle, and keep the spring pad width at Toyota spec's.. I did the same thing,, and now running CTM's and Warns, it was easy to get the Warns, no special orders, the short side stays stock Chevy length and the casted pad is the same, Jacob installed a 1" forward plate on the pads ,to move the axle forward a little..
THAT IS SICK for highschool fab class, thats not a lamp or a woodshop project, way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kcrawler 06-17-2003, 01:55 AM Shweet. I am 17 SAS'ing a 91 and have buddies with an 80, 84, 85,88 we all run stickers that say Kid Crawlers if ya see us toss us a wave. :) (we pay for them with after school jobs not parents)
HANGTOWNCRUZR 06-17-2003, 08:14 AM My son is 14 and he talks about building a rig nearly everyday I can't wait! Good job on your high school project! Every kid needs a mentor you can't always work with your dad on a project like this. I did things on a dirt track car in high school for a neighbor that I would never have done for my dad. It is guys like you that give our young men a good chance to make something out of themselves
Bigger Valves 06-17-2003, 08:37 AM that's too cool.. i would've given anything to get to do a senior project like that!!
and i remember when i tossed around the idea of doing triple 2.28 cases or dual with 2.28 and 4.7 that it came out cheaper to do the triple with a lower crawl ratio to boot..
Muttrk 06-17-2003, 08:38 AM That is sweet man! My senior welding class project was a sand rail. It was a blast!! 4 years of welding class and the only thing that I weld now is on my truck lol. Good luck with it.
whitemtns 06-17-2003, 08:49 AM congrats on a sweet looking rig, and some damn good work. can't beat hands on experience
TrailToys 06-17-2003, 08:56 AM got ya bested built my own rig myself at 15. muhaha
