I have a 68 Scout 800 without power brakes and power steering with a slant 4cyl. What can a man do to get power brakes and steering and still use that motor. Anyone that can help let give me some ideas please.

Sawzall the inner fender and move the battery, then install a booster and bracket. :D

You can start with a search, then head over to the Binder (http://www.binderbulletin.org)

I thought about hydro steer but I will be driving the scout hunting and fishing some but for the most part 4 wheeling. So I thought hydro would be a little much what do you think?

Well, when I was doing my web-wrenching, I sat down and figured the cost for both installing power steering, and hydro. the numbers i found both were about the same, of course i was assuming rebuilding the box and replacing worn components.

hydro is both legal and safe if properly done, and it's easier to route the hoses than steel links. plus the steering linkage will inhibit axle travel, hoses are more forgiving

Because you're 4cyl, you won't have battery location issues like a V8 800 would for a brake booster...May still need sawzall/BFH for clearance booster...I'm gonna assume that you have wheeled it enough and are running big enough meats to determine that you really must have power steer? Then go hydro....you aren't really going to put power brakes on your stock D27 axle are you?

I am building a pair of Dana 44's to set under it and going to go from 31 12.50 15 to 36 12.50 15's I guess hydro steer would be ok for the little on road driving I will be doing. I haven't wheeled this scout yet I just have bought it and in the process of building it. I bought it dirt cheap. I am driving it around the neighborhood some. I am leaving the stock 4cyl in it til it lets go. It doesn't smoke at all so it will be a while before that happens. I don't know about scouts much, but very excited about having one. Any info I can get is appriciated. I want hydro steer that isn't to squirrelly.

What kind of booster is that? I need to find one small like that, so I could possibly keep from cutting the fender.

That's a hydro booster, uses power sterring pump instead of vaccum.

my hydo booster is from an 85 diesel blazer. Havn't started my truck with it installed yet( hopefully this weekend) but from my expierence with hydro boost, it is the most powerful assist available,so long as your engine stays running.

Didn't grand nationals and a couple other cars us electric assist?

Well I am running a 4 cyl without power steering so that wouldn't be an option unless I can find a way to mount a pump to the motor.

BETA-any update on your hydrobooster and how it's working out? If you have any more detailed shots of how you mounted it that'd be a bonus :D

The problem with PS is that it would be extremely hard if not impossible to find a stock PS pump with bracket. Most guys have had to fab something up. I was thinking of a hydro pump from the local farm store and a remote resevoir.

I would go with the hydro booster instead of a vacuum booster. My 152 barely makes enough vacuum to run the wipers.

Since you are going with d44's (are they scout II d44's?), I would opt for the SII master cylinder with no booster. I did this on my daughter's 800A and it stopped on a dime. On her's we had SII D44's with front discs, 31 x 10.50 tires, power steering, and non-boosted SII master cylinder. The motor was a 232 amc with a 3 speed.
