I recieved a respense from holley on my origanal letter. It was transferd to their q.c. depatment.
I post this here in the hopes someone researching this carb can use some of the problems I have had to help in their decision.
It is the best I can do Flame Away :D
Thank you for your response
First let me apologize for the unprofessional letter.I was aggravated and went off half cocked.
Second I want you to understand that I take full responsibility for this problem. It is my fault that the tube was not inserted far enough into the primary side and too far enough into the secondary.
Though this design has been used before it seems my tube is a bit short by a quarter inch or so.This does not allow full engagement into both the primary and secondary bowl rubber gasket.I stick to my guns thinking that it is a poor design.I would like to change the bowls to the side feed type with a.n fittings. But for now I will replace the o-rings and install a slightly longer tube.
Again the gaskets were square in the bowls it was the lack of engagement that was the problem.I am not the first that has run into this problem.
As for the tuning.
With my primary blades fully closed and the idle screw backed off all the way their is still about .055 of the Idle transfer slot exposed leaving no room for increasing the opening and bring up the idle while still maintaining a clean off idle part throttle acceleration.I have compensated by opening the secondary by 3/4 turn via the screw on the bottom. That has gotten the idle were I like it and improved the off idle acceleration. The final step was to go up to a .037 shooter. That part works great now.But took at least 10 adjustments.
When I first installed the carb I was able to adjust the floats fine. After about a day I was receiving no fuel to the secondary. It seems a piece of casting flash found its way into the needle and seat.
I finned the fit and finish to be sub par and have taken it upon myself to clean all the flash off.We should have no more foreign object problems..
As for the jetting I have gotten the primary were I want it and now have a smooth transition through the powervalve. But I find the secondary to be very unresponsive to jet changes.Though a little rich on top with the big 89 ,But not by much I have stepped 2 at a time down to a 77.
As for the secondary opening rate.My engine seems to like a later opening then the silver spring can provide but still needs the full opening that the same spring gives at higher rpm.
Like I said, my problem is that a carb that needs so much fiddling and needs to come apart so much should have a better way to ensure their are no leaks. The way in my eyes is to change the bowls for the type that use fittings.
Again I got complacent took a short cut and got bit.I should have pulled the ignition wire cranked it quick and checked for leaks.I did not and am lucky. I at least checked for leaks after it was running.
I may not come across in my letter showing I no what I am doing.I do,but I have a concern for the guy who skips one more step.Checking for leaks. He just closes the hood and goes.Heck it skipped one step I should not have.It could have been me.
Again I can not stress that In my opinion you should take a look at your fuel crossover.I believe that a more leak proof threaded fitting setup could save some serious possible deadly problems
