By the way, good looking shop!

go to a real paint store and insist on a two part oil based epoxy. they will probally try and sell you a two part latex. don't waste your time. get the good stuff.

i like interthane made by international. it is a super glossy finish that last years. slippery as hell when wet but looks good and lasts

the secrect to a good finish is tempeture and floor prep. clean the floor with laqure thinner and remove all old paint and grud. wait unil the concrete is at least 70 degrees and the air temp is above 75 and will stay ther for at least 12 hours.

06-19-2003, 12:57 PM
AZRocks, they say you should be sure the concrete cures for several weeks before painting. If its a new home. FWIW.
I used the floor paint from Home Depot, it was $50 or $75 per gallon. Mine took 3 gallons for a 3 car garage floor.

Thanks for the info. Everything I've read supports what you said. I'm going to do it right because after I move in, it'll be a LONG time before I see the whole floor at one time again!

I think I'm going to get some fine grit sand and mix in to help with the traction department. I'll look into the interthane.

Camo,

What kind of Bikes you riding? I raced Motocross locally for several years. I always rode Yellow!:D I moved close to one of Missouri's premier Motocross/Trail Park's, but have sold my Bikes to fund other projects. Plus, a fat 30 year old just cant hang with those 18 year-olds anymore!

Shop looks great. The painted floors help clean up duties. If your rig is anything like mine, it leaks out of every orfice - even after new gaskets and seals are added.

for new concrete you need to etch it with some stuff that remove the lime. the lime will seep outherwise and peel up the paint

Be careful when doing things like removing the headstock or disassembling the tailstock. Depending upon the mfgr. you may find shims placed under various components from the factory to compensate for variations in the castings. If you disassemble to this point, your paint job just became a full-blown realignment that might require scraping of the ways. You may end up with a much better piece of machinery, but at a cost that might rival buying one that had already been painted.

I learned this the hard way with a very nice old South Bend... But, it has a great paint job!

Peace,
Paul

i bought mine sight unseen. got lucky because it had not been abused or even used alot. buying one from an auction can be risky if you don't know how to check em out.

if it has a digital read out grap the table on one end and push and pull as hard as you can. you want as little play as posssible. mine has less then .001 play on the DRO.

if you just want a mill and don't know much about machining then even one with slop will still serve you well. heck some of the best machainst i know built high end parts on old sloppy mills

If you don't know what you're looking at, you're better off buying a Harbor Freight Mill/Drill and using it until you're proficient, then get a nice big one. Not meant to be insulting, but you can buy junk if you're not looking closely and auctions are not the place to be learning unless the lessons are very cheap.

Go to your local high school and ask about adult continuing education. Most have a machine tool technology program.

Camo is right, good machinists can make great parts with junk machinery. Good machinists.

If only this were true everywhere. The high school I went to is the only one in San Diego County that still has a metal shop and an auto shop :(

My sophmore year the town next door opened a brand new HS that cost over $40 million to build. Guess what, no metals, no auto, no wood, no photo, basically NO SHOP period. Oh but they did have a great theatre and art department  :rainbow:

$3900. in 1969 ;) It was my father's first machine when he started his business. I still have the receipt and loan papers. It is a Graziano Sag 12. Variable speed and brake in the handle as well as any kind of thread pitch you can imagine. I finally got a hold of it this year and am trying to get it back into shape. It's running now but likes to smoke the transformer in the control panel.

in hebrew we refer to a pharmacy(i believe you call it drugstore in the states, right?) as the cleanest place one can find, selling

Amen, I tagged everything with blue painters tape (my wife gave me some funny looks). After four months if I hadn't touched it I donated it to charity. It was hard to get rid of some of the stuff but floorspace is valuable!!!

Another way to do it is to put stuff in a box that you know you really don't need. Tape it up and give yourself about three months to forget whats inside. Then just haul it all away!

Oh great another one of these threads... hehe

I both hate and like these threads at the same time.

I hate them because I am stuck at this house with a carport and a 15x10 room just off of the carport with all of my "garage stuff" in it.

I like these threads because it gives me alot of good ideas for when I get the FAWK out of here and get a "SHOP!!!"

Later.

If your not going to run it from the house you will have to contact the power co about puting in a seperate elec. entrance. I have a seperate 200 amp box in my garage , it was easier and cheaper than running it from the house because I would have had to replace the 100 amp box in the house.

All you guys with shops (or not) -

A warning -

If you are planning on moving, give away or sell everything you can. The old housings, the 20 1 foot pieces of scrap metal, pieces of 2 x etc.

I moved this weekend. The shop crap and scraps, with NO tools was 3 trailer loads (7 x 12 enclosed Wells Cargo) and no way was my wife helping me.

By the end of it, I was getting PO'D:mad:

If you can't sell it at a garage sale, it ain't worth keeping....

The last trailer load isn't unpacked, and unless I get a spurt of energy between unpacking other stuff and painting, its staying in there for a month!:flipoff2:

I just moved into a house and my wife said the same thing. She wanted stuff in the house to get done first. Anytime I needed a tool or some painting stuff i'd have to rip up the garage just to find the damn thing.

So one day when she went to work I tweaked in the garage to get some order back in my life so now I know where things are.

Now inside projects are getting done in record time because of the organized garage.

The inside of the house is now livable and now the focus is being turned to the garage. :bounce2:

Some of you guys flat have it made... I had to give up my 30 x 50" shop when I moved down to KY from Wisconsin. Now, I have a 10' x12' garden shed (with 2 drill presses, gridners - chop saw, motor tools and stand - tubing notcher - two welders and a tank set - hand tools - wood tools - air tools - jacks and stands and some VERY creative shelving) and a carport that gets me reported to the neighborhood patrol if I make too much noise or get too greasy. I still manage to fabricate all my own stuff from that, but I have to pull everything outside every time I do a job. Oh well, in about a year and a half it is house (make that FARM) hunting - and there WILL be a shop with ALL the goodies...

Where did you get the big cabinets/drawers for nuts/bolts/washers? How much $? Were they stocked?

I'm tired of searching through dozens of coffee cans/crappy plastic toolboxes when I need nuts&bolts. What started as a "magic bolt box" has become a fawking mess and I'm ready to organize em. I've looked at Lowe's and Home Depot but everything they have is overpriced crappy plastic.

I have a fastener shop two doors down from the shop, been buying from them since 1979. I usually walk down and buy 100 of whatever I need at the time. Surprisingly, sometimes I should buy by 1000, especially 1/4"-28 nuts/bolts/washers.

Camo, great info on the hardware, thank you. When it goes on sale is this reflected on the website? Or do you absolutely have to call your local dealer to find out? I don't really have a "local" dealer (bout 60 miles away), which is why I'm asking.

not sure if the sale price is reflected on the web or not but i would think they would. maybe call the nearest dealer and tell them what you want and to call you when it goes on sale again so you can drive over and buy one. he may even be able to swing the deal now since it would give them a new account

Hey atb I have been in your shoes a few time's..lol..The first one was a old shed that was missing a floor and 2 walls in the end because they fell down and had a big hole in the center of the roof. When I was a kid living there I had a bug and did not have enough jack's to lift it and my friends were not around so I dug a hole under it to slide the motor out to change it.The I had a canopy axactly like yours except hooked to a camping trailer when I did my front axle in my jeep. Now I share a 40 x 40 with my dad that has gravel floor but I have almost everything to finish my new 30 x 60 x 14 so that will be a change..lol..so you will get there to

I like to have a lot of my equipment and storage portable or on wheels.
So, when I need more room or when it's time to paint I just roll stuff like my tool boxes, liquids rack, log work table, vise & anvils, and grinder stand over to the other side and can even curtain it off.
I like to hang stuff from the ceilings and from hoists to get them off the floor too ...

When I was pricing out my steel building the prices between something like 30x40 and 40x60 were not a whole lot. I ended up having to get a pretty small one because of the lot we live on, 20x30. I know more space the better.

I bought it through Cobalt Steel out of Corinth, jsut north of dallas.

Maybe you can answer this then, is there suppose to be a chain or something with them so i can open and close them?

It depends on if the company who ordered them ordered them with a chain pull or not.

Heres some intructions on how to install and some basic info on how they work (http://www.mpvent.com/FLAT%20SKIRT%20VENT%20INSTALLATION%20INSTRUCTIONS. pdf) let me know if you need anything else.

I ask, because I'm thinking about doing one sometime in the next year or so with the same size.

BTW, looks nice!

I just ordered mine last week... 30 x 60 with 13 foot eaves...16 x 12 roll up door on the front and a 8 x 8 in the rear.. should have the plans back next week sometime and hopefully start construction twards the end of september if all goes as planned.

Orderd mine from Andersen Steel in Lodi CA...my cousin just put up a 40 x 40 from them and they are very nice..way nicer than the VP building we put up at work in 1999

Sound Man,
If you hook all three together you need a actual wall operator kit (sold seperately) the vents come (when ordered) with S.V.O (single vent operator) kits. The ridge vents are spring loaded to open.

Basically if you take all thre vents and hook them together per the details on our website and go get some 3/16 cable and pulleys and run the cable from one end thru the pulley over to the wall and down your golden. It would need a hook or catch to kepp it open but thats the basic idea of a wall operator kit.

Shoot me and email at gary@mpvent.com and i'd be glad to see what I can find.

I dont know anything about the shop you are asking about, but I am in the process of building a timber frame type shop (26x30x12H) with a kit type system from here: http://www.socketsystems.com/ . you need to come up with your own timbers, but it is a straight forward build. Ill post some pics of it when I get farther along in the framing.

kind of both. If you want a simple design like mine then it is a flat rate. But if you want it custom with names logo's ect. then it's by quote.

You have to remember, most of the tech in this thread is YEARS old. Lifts USED to be like unobtainium, like back when 35's were badass. Now, all the cool kids got some.

I'm not sure that it was that they were unobtainable, just that they seemed to be beyond the scope of a home shop. I built my shop in the late '90's and just assumed that a lift was out of the question. Remember, internet back then was bulletin boards and mail lists. Nobody was posting pictures of all these cool shops...

Agreed, but the element "unobtainium" is not the same as unobtainable. It's just super-bling-gee-whiz-OMFG-expensive. While not necessarily the same, they weren't common in home shops of the time, even for pimps like Camo.

PAToyota
12-15-2009, 08:42 PM
Yep, I know what you meant. I just feel that people didn't even look into lifts because of the perception - I know I didn't. But when I did end up checking into them they weren't that far out there.

Looking back on it, I have no idea why I didn't ever bother talking to one of the local garages and at least asking what a lift cost. I was certainly looking at and acquiring other equipment that was in the same ballpark.

Those are machinist flip-flops... Best safety equipment money can buy...

It's a pretty standard machine, it's a bridgeport knockoff. It's got a 2HP variable speed head, with a 9X50 table. At the moment only bling it has is a power-feed, but once I get things up and running with it I'll be adding a DRO.
