Are there any concerns with ring gears or pinions getting too small/weak the higher you go for the RC D44 out of a 79. I am debating between 4.88 and 5.13, and want to keep the 44 as strong as possible.
Thanks for the newbie question/answers

What size tires and what is the weight of your rig. I assume that this is for the front. I wouldn't have any issues with 5.13's in an RC44 front. I would still bet the axles will bust before the R&P as long as it was set right and of good quality. I have used 5.89's in a zuki with 44;s front and rear and the have been fine but that is a light weight rig no doubt. The stock zuki stuff was so small that the 44 stub axle was bigger than any of the other stock axles we took out.:D

In a rig that heavy, it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you plan on wheeling it hard enough to break a pinion (probably won't break the ring gear), then you'll also be bustin' up the axles and u-joints just as often, if not more.

warn shafts, ctms and a locker. Like to wheel to con and the dusy.
So is the pinion getting to small at 5.13, should I stay at 4.88, or can I get by with 5.13?

Here if this helps, D44 5.13 compared with 14FF 5.13.

Isn't there a gear ratio for the d44 where the numerically higher gear is stronger than the numerically lower gear. 5.13's and 5.38's or something.
just a thought
this may not be applicable to a RC d44 though

in a heavy rig i would stay at 4:56/ run a BEEFY automatic trany and do the ORD doubler.and run 2 or 3 coolers.put guage on that tranny.
