searched and posted in LC section also.
I am running this set-up in my sami. My first pump lasted 2 trips, I replaced it and took it out today and it started running hot again. I am running a cooler and am locked in the front but when wheeling it for a while the pump cant seem to handle it. Are these two components not compatable? I know the box is good and these pumpsare used on bigger trucks so I dont know what the problem could be. Any ideas?? Will toing that trick to increase pressure/flow cure this? Seems like it would make it worse but what do I know. TIA

How is your steering geometry? Does the system get hot just idling in the driveway, or only when you wheel the locked front end on rock? Your components are "compatible". Give us some more information.

A system that gets hot no matter what can be due to a bad or plugged dump valve in the steering box. This causes the pump to "dead-head" and gives the fluid no where to go unless you are actually cycling the steering box. Even a partially plugged orifice in the box will create a lot of heat.

Poorly aligned steering geometery or an excessively long pitman arm can cause overheating of the system if you are doing a lot of turning.

Tusker, sorry for the long delay, worked other items. It happens in the driveway when I bump up the RPM's. The pump gets noisy, the high pressure line gets rock hard and you can feel the fluid pulsating in the return line and everything, including the box, gets hot. I boosted the pressure and volume of the pump and that just seemed to make it worse, which makes sense if it is the dump valve in the box. Is there a fix or another way to confirm the box is bad? They are expensive. The geometry is as good as it can get, I have hi-steer so the drag link and tie rod are parallel and the axles and box are from the same cruiser so the pitman are is the correct length. Thanks for the imput. Anybody else?

pm lake rat, godzuki has had the same problems with the same set up. lake rat was talking about removing some restrictor in the fj 60 box. mike

It sounds like you have a bad dump (a.k.a. bypass) valve in your box or something else restricting flow in the system. Just idling, a proper system should never get hot, and really can't as long as things are allowed to flow the way they should. If you upped the pressure/flow of the pump and it got worse, then I can't think of any other cause. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything though.

Anyway, scwafish had the same problem with his old box, which was either a Celica or Sidekick box. Whichever one he had was plagued by a bad bypass valve. He went to an FJ-60 box and it works awesome now. He uses the AGR high pressure/high flow pump which I also use. The combination works well IF you have a good steering box.

In case it isn't some physical obstruction in the system, you might try "backflushing" the system (if that is even possible). I wouldn't know where to start on that though. If not, it is time for a new box.

good info, thanks. I will send lake rat a PM. It must be a restriction somewhere. The box got hot to the touch after idleing for about 5 minutes and I never touched the steering wheel. I located another box. Ill swap it out and see what happens.

Keep us posted. I'd like to know if the swap-out works.

If you end up trying to rebuild the FJ box I think you can get a lot of parts from a used pre 85 Toyota PU (4x4) since they seem to be the same except for the worm gear & spur gear & they are super cheap if not free.:D

Sounds like the pump is dropping into bypass. This will really gets things hot fast!

If there is a block in the line or pump, then you could drop into bypass right away at the pump.

Did you use good hydraulic lines? Normal rubber will fall apart and clog the system.

I used the saginaw hose, it was in good shape. The box sat on my garage floor for about a year, some crud could have gotten into one of the ports.

Mine was initially tempermental, but seems to be working fine now. The power is fantastic.

UPDATE: I back flushed the box and got 2 metal shavings out of it. I put in another box and undid the pressure/flow mod I did to the pump. I havent wheeled it yet but I did a bunch of figure-8's in the parking lot to test it and my new welded front diff. It seemed to do really good but it was hot by the time I was done messing around but the pump did not squeel or puke. I have to wheel it to really try it out though.

I ended up putting in a small cooler and it has made the setup run much cooler.

That thing is sweet, but not needed. I used a $30 unit from Jegs.
