i want to put a minispool in my rear dana 44. it currently has 3.54 gears. i plan on switching to 4.56's so i know that a new carrier will be in order. my question is whether or not the minispool will work in the different carrier. i dont want to spend the money twice if i can help it.

I have looked before and no luck. If you find one post it because some others would like to know.

no one here knows where to get one???? damn gonna have to dig out the magazines and catalogs... I know I found one, I remember it was more expensive then most others though like $120 or more, it wasnt alot less then a full spool I think. Call jegs I think they might have them, or drivetrain direct

I think that I saw a mini-spool advertised in 4WD and Sport Utility, under a Randy's Ring and Pinion ad. I think it was like 80-90 bucks?

And as far as the carrier, I don't believe that there is an "internal" difference between the carriers. You would be able to use the spider gears from one to another, so you should be able to use a mini-spool.

Try to find out if there are different part numbers for "lunchbox" lockers for the different gear ranges. They use all internal parts, so if the part number is the same then the mini-spool will be too. Good luck.

I run a dana 44 front with a randys ring an pinion mini spool. it was $86, took 1.5 hours to install, and works great.

i was told by randys that it will work when i go to a 4.56 gearset and carrier. im currently running 4.10s.

Isn't the carrier split from 3.92 to 4.10?

If you are going with a mini spool I am 98% positive it is not specific to what gear ratio you have, You will need a new carrier when you go to different gears..

If you go with a full spool you will need a different spool when you go to the lager gears..

If you look up on richmonds site they list one part number for the dana 44 option in mini spool and two part numbers for the full spool.. Thats should give you your answer right there..

Richmon mini spool DANA 44 MINI STEEL 30 78-4430-1

Richmond Full spool
DANA 44 3.92 UP FULL STEEL 30 81-4430-1
DANA 44 3.73 DN FULL STEEL 30 81-4430X-1

Personally if you know someone with a welder, Weld the spiders for now and get a full spool when going the larger gears.. THis way it removes the expense of a new carrier later down the road..

The break on a 44 is 3.92-up 3.73-down
What spline options do they have? just 30 or more? The problem with a 44 is the carrier on a 44 isn't all that strong for the rear so be nice to it.

I had one a couple of years ago in the rear. Strange makes it I think it was 75.00 from reider racing. As for the carrier it doesnt matter what ratio it is the reason is the only thing that changes is place where the ring gear is placed is moved nothing is different on the inside. One problem though is that while the strange mini spool never broke the carriers will on a regular basis. I believe if I was going to upgrade down the road I would just weld it too and save the $$$ for a locker or full spool. CJdean they are only in 30 spline but there is enough room to rebroach it to at least 33 spline and poss 35 spline it shouldnt hurt the spool because they are thru hardened :smokin: :smokin:

Drivetrain Direct has them. I went to buy a full spool for my Dana 44 from them but they couldnt get it in time so I called elsewhere. I cant remember offhand where I ended up getting it. I believe it was Telico 4x4.

:smokin: i have decided to go ahead and weld up the rear end. when i do my gear change i will go with a full spool. after reading what you guys have said, it seems to make the most sense. thanks for the info and insight.......
