I was wondering if any one had any pics of unimog axles under a rock buggy. I have got a tj i am about to start on and was thinking of runing portals but cant find any where to answer my questions. Some one told me this was the best place to ask. Heard they are as strong as a dana 60? How hard are they to work on? what model would be best? Just looking for some ideas.
Thank you for your time.

Welcome Newbie,

hmmmmmm have we heard these questions before.. hmmm... Like a hundred times. :flipoff2: bwwahhaahha. It must be a newbie thing..... I remember my days of the newbie status asking questions like they were NEW... anyway.... since newbies exist I created a special place to help answer their questions. It was staring you in the face when you popped in here. Just go here and look thru the material (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=143224)

Also, their is this thing on here that looks like this http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/images/top_search.gif up on top of the page on the right side. I suggest you use it for more detailed searches. Granted... the science of knowing what terms to search by is not easy.... it will come with practice.; I think, Im still trying myself. Another reason I created the above FAQ area.

Nah..... no inconvenience...... check out the FAQ's etc. Talk to Daniel or Wolfgang (both with killeraxle) and others and rattle off more questions here too. (after reading thru the FAQ's :flipoff2:)

By the way Welcome to Mog on the brain

oh..... and by the way.... there are a few Mog things for sale that you can just build a buggy out of in the forsale area. A post about sweet trail mog thats for sale just got mentioned in this forum too.

Good luck.

PS. I sold my TJ and went full Mog. :

I think I have decided on mog axles. But I have not heard any bad things about them, hope this is a sign. I am open to suggestion and ideas on what to use if any has any pointers from there experience to throw my way. Also could use some good pics for ideas if any one has an idea of what would work well.

dlc? In your search for info did you find the guy who was asking the same questions about TJ's and mog axles? We had a discussion on this only a month ago.

Maybe try a search in this forum for < TJ and axle >

Yep..... that was an easy one..... the above reccomended search pulled up about 5 things including Swiss Jeeper's thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=111155&highlight=TJ+axle) where he was asking simular questions.

Thank you for your time.

Take a look at my webpage and you will find pics of my rock buggy buildup with MOG axles. Its not finished, but will give you the idea.

And to answer your specific ?s:
Yes strong, if not stronger than D60 fronts or rears
They can be somewhat difficult to work on, i.e. fitting into a rig. A custom chassis solves some of that.
I am running axles off of a 404, and seem to have the most aftermarket support and are the easiest to source.

thanks for the help. Did you have to cut your axles down or are they okay stock

To keep the over width down I had 7" cut out of each housing. 7" off the short side on the front axle to bring the diff over more to clear the oilpan, and 7" off the long side rear to center the diff. I then installed a disc brake kit which brought the hubs back out to factory, but allowed me to run hummer rims to keep the overall width down. Outside of the tires on my rig is about 80"

This really helps to keep the front drive shaft away from the engine without having to lift the vehicle a lot. If you don't already know the MOG 404 axle come with the diff offset only 3.5" from center (to the drivers side in front, and passenger side in the rear). INHO, This is probably the biggest obstical to running MOG axles.

that is what i want to. who did your axle work. How much did it run u? I tried to get a hold of some on at killeraxle.com but have not been able to. Does any one know if they offer any axle options like what is listed above. driver side drop and center rear drop.

your rig looks great. Like the arms.

The july '03 issue of JP magazine has a TJ on mogs if you're interested. There's not much hardcore tech (big surprise:rolleyes: ), but the pictures can at least give you some ideas as to what you might need to do to pull this off.

Can't say enough good things about Taradon. I've been emailing back and forth with him. He's very helpfull, and really understands that EVERY application is custom.

I'm finishing up Mog9s under a 6banger TJ. To me it makes a difference on whether you can fit stock mogs under a TJ whether you have a 4 or 6 (the mag writeup had a 4cyl). I don't believe you can fit the mogs under a 6cyl, without tremendous lift or other compromises (changing oil pan to rear sump, moving axle WAY forward, etc).

The 9" housing, and particularly the third member have allowed me to keep the vehicle the same height it was before on D44s w/ 5" of lift. I am somewhat limited on uptravel, and you have to contend with oiling issues of the flipped 9, but it is more "physically" possible than the stock mog axles.

As for KillerAxles, I got my disk brake kits from them. They can be hard to reach, but are knowledgable and helpful, and I would recommend them, among others such as Exaxt (very good). I've not dealt with Taradon, but have *nothing* but excellent things about him on this board. Those are the three big "suppliers" here in the US on this stuff, that I know of.

Joel, I'd be interested in what you ended up having done locally by a machinist for your hub conversion (perhaps a new thread). It seems to me that it might be possible to have the stock hub machined for 8-lug and accomodate disk brakes all at once. I believe Exaxt used to do this but have since gone to machining all new hubs (could be a good reason, perhaps).
