Shaun, since you'll be coming down from the north I'll assume
you'll be coming south on I-15. When you get to Temecula take
HWY 79 south exit and follow HWY 79 to Warner Springs. About
1/4 mile past the gas station make a LEFT turn onto Camino San
Ignacio Rd. The left turn is right at the point that HWY 79 makes
a sharp turn to the right. From the turn off it's about 7 - 8 miles to
the Reservation gate.

Yup, went there the 20th - 22nd. I had fun for a while. The newly
rebuilt trans started making noises so I drove it back to camp

Trails are moderate at best, but fun. There are a couple of big obstacle hills that provide the challenge, lots of vertical stuff.

San Diego County fire burns 6,000 acres

ASSOCIATED PRESS
7:53 a.m., July 17, 2003

WARNER SPRINGS – A wildfire had burned 6,000 acres of steep, hilly brush along the San Diego-Riverside county line by Thursday morning, prompting evacuation of a Boy Scout camp. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

About 600 campers were escorted out of Lost Valley Scout Reservation Summer Camp on Wednesday as a precaution, said Lora Loews, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry.

The blaze began about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at the end of Chihuahua Valley Road in Riverside County, just north of the county line. On Thursday morning, about 760 firefighters were battling the blaze which remained entirely out of control, said CDF spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik. The cause was under investigation.

Flames were advancing southeast and southwest and threatened about 50 structures, Provaznik said.

Warner Springs is a sparsely populated area on the outskirts of Cleveland National Forest, about 60 miles northeast of San Diego.

Meanwhile, a stray bird flew into a power line Wednesday morning sparking a 100-acre fire on a nature preserve near San Luis Obispo. About 110 firefighters contained that blaze within six hours.

Becca and I were out last week mid-week and before going, we called to see if it was open. They said not for day use only but when we told them we planned on camping overnight, they said no problem. For those asking about the gate code...we had one BIG indian guy come to ask for our receipt. I was glad we had one cause he coulda crunched my roll cage with one hand...I suggest you don't poach any runs there!
I was playing on El Hill with the RockIt and went up then back down...Becca didn't know any different so she did the same in the CJ. The last drop was interesting but she handled it smoothly...UNTIL...the temporary pitman let loose, the wheels swung to full lock while she was giving a little gas to keep from endoing and that caused the right front axle to let go on the new 60. Thank god for the new front cutting brakes as she was able to finish the trail out and drive all of the way back to the trailed at the meadows.
Bobsled was interesting. I've done it in the jeep but needed a small tug with the winch to keep it from rolling yet still damaged the soft top. This time, I was alone in the RockIt as Becca was headed back to the trailer. I crawled most of it then had to take about 5 backups to get it on the right line to crawl on out. That was a cool lean! Never even pulled the winch but for a while I thought I would have to.
Wish we could join you but Jody wants to go to Avalanche Ranch instead...something about wanting me to follow him around in some rock stacking contest :p

18,400-acre Coyote fire burns onto grassland

By Gregory Alan Gross
STAFF WRITER

July 22, 2003

The largest wildfire in California this year began to shift gears yesterday, burning east onto flat, grassy terrain where the flames can move faster.

Despite the shift, fire officials say they hope to have the blaze surrounded by tomorrow morning and out by Sunday night.

In all, 73 homes were threatened yesterday, along with 67 other structures, said California Department of Forestry spokeswoman Lora Lowes. Thirteen structures – but no homes – have been destroyed by the fire, which was started by a lightning strike Wednesday.

The Coyote fire has burned at least 18,482 acres, the CDF said. Fire crews have contained more than half of it.

With forecasts of thunderstorms and possible "dry lightning" strikes looming, firefighters worked in triple-dight heat and rising humidity to try to close their lines around the blaze.

"The last thing we need right now is a lightning strike anywhere else," Lowes said.

Portions of Lost Valley, Chihuahua Valley and Warner Springs remained under threat yesterday, as did part of the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, the CDF said.

Nearly 2,200 firefighters, with aerial help from five tankers and 17 helicopters, worked through 103-degree heat yesterday trying to close the last 15 miles of their lines around the fire.

Until yesterday, flames had been feeding on thick stands of brush that haven't burned for 30 to 35 years, as well as dead trees killed by bark beetles and other insects, Lowes said. It also had been burning in rugged terrain that thwarted firefighters' efforts to attack the flames from close in.

As the fire moved on an east-southeasterly course, however, both the countryside and the foliage began to change, Lowes said. Firefighters now have a bit better access, but the fire can move more rapidly.

"It gets a little flatter now, but it's also sparser, more into light grasses rather than the heavy brush it was in before," she said. "The fire doesn't burn as hot in the grasses, but it moves faster, so it's a mixed blessing for us."

RE:Todd
07-22-2003, 07:13 AM
JC called yesterday, they told him they were closed. Shane called yesterday, they told him they weren't sure?? I'm calling on Wednesday, if they say they'll be closed, I'll cancel the plan.

I don't have a backup plan. Truckhaven, too hot; Hammers, too hot; Big Bear, next weekend; Anderson Lake side, too hot, will want to go to the Hammers.

Mustard Dog
07-22-2003, 07:19 AM
If we switch it to the Hammers we can just do the night run thing, I'm cool with that;)

UNION-TRIBUNE
July 23, 2003

A week-old fire that has burned nearly 19,000 acres in the northern reaches of the county should be contained this morning, said California Department of Forestry officials.

The Coyote fire is the largest in the state this year.

Crews yesterday contained at least two-thirds of the blaze and were working to contain a 9-mile front in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, said CDF spokeswoman Lora Lowes.

Sparse vegetation in the desert has made it easier for firefighters to battle the flames, Lowes said. But progress could stall if the weather doesn't cooperate.

"The winds could flare it back up," Lowes said. "The weather is going to have to behave."

The fire was triggered by lightning last Wednesday. No homes have been lost, but the fire has caused about $190,000 in damage, engulfing two trailers owned by San Diego State University as part of a research laboratory, five tents that belonged to the Lost Valley Boy Scout camp and 11 vehicles, Lowes said.

The fire started about 1 p.m. last Wednesday on Chihuahua Valley Road, at the southern edge of Riverside County. It quickly moved southeast and swept into northern San Diego County, forcing the evacuation of about 600 campers at the Boy Scout camp.

More than 2,000 firefighters are battling the flames. Officials estimate the cost of fighting the fire at $8 million. Ten firefighters have suffered minor injuries, including heat exhaustion.

Officials say they're on track to have the fire under control by Sunday night.

Your shooting for the corner area, closest to the main road (on the right of the meadow as you head towards it). Lots of trees down there. Make sure we stake out enough room for JC's palace (61 feet from front bumper to trailer drop gate). I'll be there late afternoon, early evening on Friday, the Boy has to finish summer school.

Mustard Dog,
Good meeting you and all the other Tin Benders out there. I agree with you...For $25 a day, there's not much in the way of wheeling or facilities. I think that is why there aren't as many people going there as there used to be. We had a good time though, except for the falling on my side stuff.
