It is the original Toyota logo written in the Japanese Kangi symbol alphabet.

that's to-yo-ta written in japanese katakana (syllabic alphabet for foreign-sourced words, often used by some brands to write their names... I guess it must look cooler down there...)

BTW, "kanji" are chinese-derivated ideograms, and are much more complex to draw (and read )

I thought that also but a search on LCML corrected me... I had previously thought it was katakana, but now I think it is kanji... now you are saying it is katakana again... someone fill us in... :D

I won't claim I know the whole truth about that, but you can definately read it as katakanas, and when you read it as katakanas, its says toyota. Kanjis on the other hand, have very precise rules for calligraphy, I don't think they would play like they do writing the logo, with the to coming far over the yo and ta, and the ta coming way down... I really doubt the matching kanjis (if they exist) would mean the same either... guess that pretty sums up what I've learned in japanese classes ;)

I don't absolutely WANT to be right about this (I won't piss and whine if you don't agree :flipoff2:), but I'm quite sure I am :p

And the winner is........ Stupid frnch jackasS...... I read a little more into it and you are 100% on the mark. :D

So now we know why TEQ but who knows why they continued to spell it Toyoda into the late 80's?

the founder was Mr Toyoda, but since it was a PITA to write (in kanji probably, not mucho different in the other alphabets) they switched to the "Toyota" commercial brand with a Toyoda design (in a Toyoda factory ?)... Well, basically my answer would be "just for fun" or alternatively "just to make us even more confused" ;)

The way Marv from Spectre tells it, their family name was Toyoda. Apparently it was considered good luck if when your name was written, in whatever dialect, it was done with 7 pen strokes. So they changed it to Toyota, which gave them 7 strokes. Apparently that was a story he picked up while visiting the Toyota Corp. offices in Japan.;)
