A good friend of mine is looking to get into a 78 to 91 Bronco for a daily driver and weekend desert climbing. Is there a particular year or model there which yeilds stonger drivetrain or engine. I'd like to get him into one which builds well through aftermaket parts and competes well in the desert.

THE 78-79 is the best I think I have had at least 1 of all broncos and for allround tuffnes it is the best !!;)

Yeah 78-79 for the solid axle in front, but does he want a 21 year old truck for a DD. I love my 94 drove it every day from 94-2000. Also wheeled the s#it out of it. Very comfy with full carpet, leather, heat, ac, power windows/locks, etc etc. It all depends on where his priorities are.

Well you could do what i am doing. I have a 91 for the comfort level and i am throwing a 79 solid axle under it for the wheeling part.

The 78-79 Bronco, you could buy one of these and restore it swap in a 460, some lift, and larger tires and still come in under the price of a newer one. I would go with the restore route becuse the 78-79 have the stoutest drivetrain!

Depends upon what you mean by desert? Desert like the Hammers or desert like pre-runner? The former, solid axle, the latter, TTB. I have to agree that a '78/79 may not be the most comfortable DD. If there's much hiway involved in his daily commute I'd vote for '88-91 because of the availability of OD. The M5OD came out in '88 and the E4OD in '90. He should also think long and hard about whether or not he wants EFI - some love it and some hate it. (I love it :-))

I have a 79 Bronco and I love it. I have never had any major problems with it. I love the way it was built! The 78-79 Bronco's seem a little harder to find though. It's a 1/2 time daily driver for me as well as my rock climber. I would not have any other year besides a 78-79...
