Heres my dumb Newbie question of the month...I have a 90 YJ w/ a 4.2 and I need to replace the tranny due to synchro probs, but I am unsure which one I have. I had a guy at a tranny shop say something about it being a Toyota tranny WTF, I say? Did years seperate the diffrence between the Pugot(?) and the AX-15? TIA!

Should be an AX-15. I beleive they started in 90. Somebody who knows for sure will surely respond.

Ax15 for sure.
Started in 1990, behind the 4.2L. They were supposed to be the better tranny in the YJ line up, and Christler went to them right before the more powerful 4.0L entered the YJ line.
The AX15 in my 90 YJ also took a sh!t, synchro problems. No tranny shop would touch the thing, every body just said to replace it with some thing heavier duty.
People say it is a "Toyota transmission" because the manufacturer makes a lot of stuff for Toyota. Yota hub lockouts say Aisin right on the dial. But I have yet to find where Toyota ever used the AX15 (or the AX4/5, also used in YJs) in any of its products. Maybe a Yota purist around here knows for sure.
You could just tell people that you have a Frieghtliner tranny, as Aisin makes an automatic trans for our medium duty "Business Class" trucks and tractors

To be totally accurate, they actually started with the 89 model year, IF the 89 model was built on or after March of 1989.. But yes, you do have the AX-15 which is better than the puegot, or BA/10-5 5 speed. Ive got the puegot, and I must say, its treated me well for the last 176,500 miles but the synchros in 3rd and 4th are starting to go, and the gears are a-grindin.. Guess its a good thing I have an auto tranny on its way huh?

The AX-15 is rebuildable. I reruilt mine when the syncos went out just by using the drawings in the Quadratec catalog. It took a friend and myself about 4 hours to do. Give it a go before you scrap it.

I have the same thing and the same problem (sometimes). when she's cold second gear grinds but other than that she grinds when I put her in netural  is this the same problem? I have 150,000+ miles and about 145,000 is when I started having problems.
