On My 97 TJ the transmission will not go all the way into second gear because the shifter hits the edge of the shifter hole in the console. The only way i can get it to go in is by removing the boot around the stick and it still hits the console.

Any ideas what this might be?
I thought Maybe the t-case skid drop but other people run 1" drops with no problem.

Thanks

It is the TC drop. Just remove the shifter and bend it to fit with clearance.

Do you think a high clearance skid that raises the t-case up would fix it?

How come no body else has problems with it? is it just the 97s?

Do you have a body lift? If so that has moved the tub away from the shifter that much more. I have 1.25" of body lift and only have trouble with second during the winter while the boots are still cold. At one point I had a 1" T-case drop installed with the body lift and could barely get into second, even then it would pop out if I let go of the shifter.

Just bend the shifter forward a bit.

If I remember correctly....you can us a shifter out of a Comanche also...they are taller and bent differently.

Have you removed the neopreme rubber tube that is wrapped around the shift lever? That cured my AX-15 shifting problem by giving the shift lever a little more clearance around it. Get to it by lifting up the shift lever boot.

Yeah I did that a long time ago and it fixed it when I had my 3 inch lift but now its bad again. I just have the lever and the console... no boot... no rubber sleeve.

I had the same problem with my 94 yj, Its very simple to fix. Remove the carpet, the shifter boots and the shift lever. Next get a hack saw or resipricating saw and hack away untill you have enough clearance. Also if your shifter is still hittin on the center consol when your done just bend it, its very easy you dont even have to heat it up if you have a large enough hammmer.

It is built in to the skyjacker RR lower control arm frame side mounting brackets. No way to get around it without extreme welding.

I think the YJs are quite a bit different here based on what you said. The problem is the boot snaps into the console and notching the console will leave a hole next to the boot as well as not making the boot fit properly.

I have a friend with a tj, I'll take a look at the shifter and see if I can come up with any idea's. Sometimes you just have to get the sawzall out and start fabricating though. Good luck.
