: noise when decelerating???

i have an ax15 transmission and whenever i down shift and use the engine to slow down i get a noise from under the jeep thats like a card hitting the spokes of a bicycle but more metallic sounding.. its hard to describe. it slows down with the car but i cant get it to do it when accelerating and if i push the clutch in or put it in neutral it stops. seems to be in all of the gears when slowing down. could a bad bearing cause this noise or a broken tooth on a gear somewhere? i dont see why it would only make noise decelerating not accelerating. the only other thing i thought it could be is my pinion bearing but it feels more like its coming through the transmission.

thanks in advance. oh its a 95 yj with 36s and traction bar and cv driveshaft if that helps.

I had the same kind of thing happen and it was in my rear diff. I have an ox locker and it was caused by the center block cracking and dropping peices into my spyder gears. Sounded exactly as you described it though i doubt you happen to have an ox locker too.

Almost everything that I've had go wrong in my drive train causes some noise that seems to come from the transmission area. Even rear axle side bearings... yeah wierd I know. Don't rule out your axles and diffs too soon.

hope this helps

just a thought, check the pinion, make sure it ain't loose, had a blazer do that one time, just kept drivin on it till something gave, let of the gas and the rear would lock up, thats how i figured it out

Could be pinion angle is to high.
I would check that the flange nut on the binion was torqed down and the u joint straps are tight.

I had a rear pinion nut loosen up on me and it was making racket like what you describe also...

well the ujoints in the cv shaft are toast and the cv part is wobbly (technical term). i tightened the yoke like 1/4" turn for good measure and its tight now for sure so time to get the driveshaftrebuilt.. thanks for the help.
