: 203 transfercase question
bigwilly 11-27-2001, 08:57 AM OK, I've never had a rig with a 203 and I don't know shit about em. A friend a work is having problems with his. He says it will go into 4 wd low loc and 4 wd high loc but when he shifts into 2wd high or low the truck won't move? Anyone....anyone....?
NE-RokToy 11-27-2001, 09:06 AM well a 203 doesnt have 2wd so that could be the problem :p
seriously though, does he have all the front drive parts in ther (i.e. axle shafts, drive shaft...) if not the truck will not go unless in loc. If all the front end is working I would say the part that allows the front and rear to spin at different speeds (don't know what its called) is messed up. I would do a part time conversion on it sense its cheap and will give him 2wd
Nobody 11-27-2001, 09:21 AM I can almost guarantee that the linkage needs to be adjusted. Is it in cheby? Those shifters are a real pos.
bigwilly 11-27-2001, 09:50 AM it is in a cheby, I realize the truck doesn't have a true 2 wd but it does have high/low and high/low lock. The problem is the truck only moves in high/low lock and not high/low.

yes, all the parts are in. I would agree with you in saying that part that we don't know the name of is messed up. I guess it could be the linkage too though?

Beg your pardon? The majority of those things came with Hurst Shifters.
Doesn't sound like a shifter deal to me. Either the guy swapped in hubs on the front and hasn't locked them, the front end is toast, no driveshaft, or the differential in the case is trying to die.
Crawl underneath when he puts it into one of the none lock posistions, and look to see if the front driveshaft is turning by itself.
You have to have either the hubs locked in, or the original flanges on the front end for this dela to work.
Grim Reaper 11-27-2001, 01:54 PM sounds to me like sombody put hubs on the front axle but the transfer case is still full time. Un lock the hubs put it in gear with it in anything but the LOC posistion and watch the front shaft. If it starts spinning then the case is still full time. Lock the hubs and drive it. Should be fine.
bigwilly 11-27-2001, 03:13 PM there is no unlockable hubs on the truck. the front end is completely rebuilt. the driveshaft forward is all good and in stock condition. must be in the transfer case.
WheelingPiazza 11-27-2001, 04:36 PM The part you guys are refering to is called a vicus(sp) coupling, There are two types, one is a series of gears in a collar type thing and the other theree gears. Its located in the rear tail shaft of the transfercase. A good part time kit will remove this peice and replace it swith a shaft witha solid ring.
If the front end is in good shape, and he has the lock out plates still installed then I am willing to bet that either the internal gears of the t-case are screwed or somethign with this Viscus couple is broken..
(from memory) the linkage is a straight flat rod that connects to teh shift rails theres no real linkage to go bad.. but to verify this, remove the shift boot and cycle the shifter, you get a decent view of the linkage from the top of the case.
Like some one said, crawl under the truck and try spinning the front shaft by hand, you shouldnt be able to. If it does then theres a problem in the front end..
it doesnt have a viscous coupler
it has a lockable differential

Big Deal, Nasa could have made them, they still suck. Almost every 203 I've ever seen or had, has a worn out shifter.
I would recomend installing a part-time kit w/ some unlocking hubs, and then maybe even build a twin stick shifter out of the stock **HURST** shifter. I did the same and was very pleased with the outcome. Now I know that doesn't directly answer the original question but it could be a possible solution.

How is that possible  Their is virtually nothing there to wear out?
It's my personal opinion that if you are going to go to the trouble of front hubs and part time kits, you might want to consider just putting a 205 in. Hell, why not leave the front in full time and put a 205 in, no more hubs to break and you'll always no if your locked in :D
bigwilly 11-28-2001, 07:32 AM thanks for the input guys.
