: could bad Torque converter cause engine to sputter/die

i've been having a hell of a time with my jeep lately, had a knocking noise thought it was the engine, swaped it for another 258 still knocking, swapped the tranny and TC still knocking, turns out it was the flexplate the whole time, changed that and noise is gone,
then i took it to big dogs in Gore VA and for some reason the engine would sputter and stall out while wheelin so i had to bail on big dogs, i thought it was a real loose timing chain or something then the engine i swapped it started having SICK blowby, so i swapped my old engine back in. just went wheeling at a local place arond here and after about 20 minutes it start sputtering out and stalling again, only way to keep it running was to tap the gas and brake off and on, still did it all the way home had to tap the gas faster and faster to get it up to speed. now both times after letting it sit for a while it was fine to drive on the road, is it possible that the TC could be bad or is it something in the tranny, it never did any of this befor the engine tranny swap ican put the old trans and TC in but my old tranny was making some wierd noises befor the swap so if its just the TC i'd rather just swap the old one back in.
this is all on a 258, TF999 combo.
any ideas are appreciated
thanks

Sounds like a fuel problem, maybe vapor lock. You running any of the lines close to the exhaust or tranny?

nope no lines by the tranny or exhaust, and they are all in the same places as befor it started happening. and when i wrote the post yesterday i hadn't tried to drive it since i got back from wheeling and now it does it right from start up when i try to drive it will sputter out if i stay on the gas, it does it in neutral and park thats why i think its the TC. noone has ever seen anything like this? i am sure its not the engine cause it did it with the old engine and now the new one, i am useing the same carb, intake and exhaust on both engines the float is right on and the ejts are clean, its getting fuel, tranny fluid is full

if the parts in the TC were broken could they jam up and put such a load on the engine that it would sputter out? or be broke and out of balance so bad it throws the balance of the engine off?
i need some help here

Can you remove the bolts in the flex plate to disconnect the torque converter? This would allow you to run the engine independently of the tranny.

Some vehicles have the ring gear on the torque converter and I readily admit my ignorance of your specific setup, but still hope it helps.

Sounds like a fuel problem.
I've never heard of a TC or tranny causing problems like what you described.

Fuel injected?

I assembled my tranny without seating the torque converter fully once. It ended up braking the pump when I put it together. It would want to start and sputter like you say. I could rev it up and keep it going but letting off the gas it died. Needless to say it would not move in any gear, so I don't think the TC/tranny is your problem :D

just to explain the rig a little.
89 YJ
80-84 cj 258 with MC2100 carb and ford ignition ( cap, rotor, coil and module
TF999 and flexplate from 87 yj
d300 and 3/4 axles

not fuel injected, i have a MC2100 carb and the flexplate has the ringgear on it for the starter, it idles fine but once i start pressing the gas it starts sputtering, i guess i could try takeing the TC to flexplate bolts out and see if its the so i know for sure, i'll give it a shot, keep the ideas coming i have to get this thing running, its my DD and i don't know if i can keep finding rides to work.

Before I unbolted the tranny I would check spark on all cylinders. Could be plug, wire, or something in the cap and will only do iunder load. You said you reused all those parts from one engine to the other. Just an idea.
