View Full Version : Lift kits - which brand?
I am lifting my 92 SWB Bighorn (Trooper) and would like feedback on kits people are running.
I am considering a Calmini kit at present, but these are quite pricey, are they worth the money? Any other recommended brands? (must be able to export to New Zealand).
While on the subject, how involved is doing a body lift, I will be paying a mechanic, but they have never done one before.
Anything to keep an eye on? It will be about a 2" lift to hopefully clear my 33's.
Thanks in advance,Dave

I would think OME would be the cheaper kit for you in New Zealand, not to mention a better kit.
Your would need the OME 912 coils which provide 1.5 in lift, then spacers that will provide you with the rest of the lift. Front lift is achieved via Tbar crank.
For full 2-3 inches of lift to clear your 33's there are several other minor mods for the front end. Ball Joint Flip, spacers etc.
Talk to Matt at Independent4x.com or Im sure others will chime in with more info.

Hey Dave,
Can you get hold of the Australian mag "4WD Monthly" in New Zealand? Issue #54 (June 2003) has a fairly detailed write up for a body lift on a MU. The process would be pretty similar to the Bighorn and would at least be useful to you rmechanic. The only tricky part was modification of the shifters. The steering column had a slip joint so no modifying required, hopefully same on yours. The only other obvious one was the bumper brackets which obviously need extending.
HTH,
Noel
Noel,
still waiting for that issue over here!!!
I'm just waiting for some prices on ball joint spacers from Indy, so I'll be ordering these in the next few days hopefully.
Once these are in it'll be body lift time (after a 1 1/2" suspension drop!) to clear the 33's.
We're also having problems over here trying to find 15" rims with the right offset, they all seem to rub the brakes. What do you guys use?

Dave,
Mine are ROH 15x8" white steelies. I think they are the "TRAK AUSTRALIA" ones here:
http://www.roh.com.au/pages/html/wheels-steel.htm
Dont know if you get them in NZ but they are extremely popular over here. Mine have an offset which gives quite a wide stance so no brake clearance issues but they do rub on the guard with upward travel. You shouldnt have much trouble finding something to suit you as the stud pattern is the same as Landcruiser/Patrols etc...
