: Custom Rims Revisited

I did several searches but my question is more specific. I need to know if anyone has FIRST HAND experience with the Rockstomper custom rims? I'm getting close to the axle rebuild and need to budget all the modifications. Someone told me they had a negative experience and suggested MRT's, but the price difference is significant, does anyone have FIRST HAND experience with MRT's as well?

I'm interested in steel rims with a custom backspacing, the heavier-duty the better; since I'm going back to 8", things like a relocated or protected valve stem would be nice but not mandatory. I don't really care much what the design is, the plainer the better, the ideal for me would be something like those fleet pickup rims that look like stock FJ40 rims without the hubcap clips, but I don't really have a preference as long as they're steel. Bonus if they can be purchased raw (unpainted), but again, I'm flexible. I need at least five but if the price is reasonable I'm buying eight of them (second spare + trailer).

Please, no bling aluminum or alloy rims suggestions, I'm old school (if it can't be restraightened with a 5-lb hammer, it doesn't go on my truck). Also, since I'm just a poseur, no beadlock suggestions either! Finally, no stock Cruiser rim widening suggestions, I've already gone that road and the result was less-than-ideal and *very* expensive.

What are your thoughts?

I had great luck with my MRT beadlocks. They were quality wheels and they were as advertised.

If I were you, I would send a set of 8" steelies from the P and P with a set of Cruiser rims and have the centers put in the steelies. You can make the BS anything you like and I am sure there are plenty of donors for the Cruiser rims since you had to give yours all away :D

Anyway, any shot with precision cutting abilities couls cut out the centers and reweld for you.

I know Sunray could do it.

Nolen, I thought about it, but I'm a little gun shy, my first experience with widening rims was a bust, and that's exactly what I did, Cruiser centers cut and welded to steelie rings. Any suggestions for some heavy duty steel rims I could take the rings out of?

Wheels are my Waterloo, these are my sixth set on the Princess and I hate them!

I don't have any experience with any custom wheels, but I'm also looking. Another option is Rocky Road (http://www.rocky-road.com/wheels.html) .

I've likewise been very pleased with my Allieds (high-impact). Good quality, look nice, sturdy.

Have you priced the differences between custom BS rims versus stock BS rims and wheel spacers? Might find some cost savings there....

$35 per steel rim x 8 = $280 plus $160 or so for 4 spacers totals $440 versus $75 per rim x 8 totals $600.

Just a thought...

i dont know where henry stands, but i sure dont like the thought of spacers, specailly on a heavy rig.
henry i went the rocky road route when i did mine, they are standard d-window type wheels from US wheel. nothing special, i dont think they are extra thick or HD. they do come raw steel and i got mine in 15x8 with 2"BS. the rim ring is backwards and they mount the stem on the flat part a good 2" in from the edge, i played around with them at first cuz ppl said the backwards rim would pop beads easy, well i took it all the way to 6PSI and rubbed the rim w/o losing the bead, i dont always do that but i wanted to see. BTW they were $54 ea. and seem to be holding up beutifully.

Henry,

Did you ever find the wheels you were looking for? I too am interested in the type of wheels you described above (look kind of like old 40 rims with the hub caps off). Any luck?
