overpriced deranged bastardized american culture.

great scuba diving

obcenly small cars and shat drivers who will aim for you sometimes cause you are american :D

base housing looked like hell (could have changed) off base housing a little pricy

beautiful waters filled with some not to friendly animals (sea snakes ,cone shells, lion fish, sea urchins, fishies with big fawking teeth)

will make you hate stateside sushi for the rest of your life.

will make you want to kill for stateside food for a few years :flipoff2:

I don't think we ever have been. The people that are protesting and talking smack are the same ones cutting the grass or driving the roach coach.

I was there in 95. Fortunately I got the heck out of there shortly after "the rape".

Overall I had a pretty good time. It took a few months before I really got out doing stuff. Of course a lot of that was getting aquainted and such.

I did a ton of snorkeling. I miss that very much. I also traveled from one end of the rock to the other. It doesn't take long to get out in the sticks.....if you believe that's possible. So......that means get yourself a car, or a friend with a car!

It'll be nice to have your family with you, but leave the phone off the hook! DO NOT USE IT. This turned into a big issue for a lot of guys. They tried to keep current with their lives back in the states. What they didn't realize is it will always be the same people doing the same stuff. In the big picture, nothing ever changes.

If you must make occasional calls to the states, try to a base phone and get patched through to a base in the states that can in turn patch you through to the person you are trying to call. I'm not sure if you can still get away with this, but we did this all the time. Otherwise use a calling card. Even better....now we have these nifty computers capable of FREE video/voice chat with loved ones.

Enjoy the time you have. It's really not that bad. Enroll yourself and family into a Japanese class. I've pretty much forgotten everything now, but it helped me get around town a bit.

From a military aspect, the quality of life is better there. Don't have to play as many "games" over there.

You say you're bringing the family. Have you already been in while? Is the military allowing you to bring your family? If not, leave them home untill you can make legit arrangements to bring them over. Sounds like a 3 year tour to me?
