: Weak spark.......any ideas??
convertiyota 11-27-2001, 11:42 AM '91 Cr250
Would bog down and shut off, had to kick the crap out of it. Then it would only roll start. Won't start at all anymore. No spark at all when I pull the plug and push the starter with your hand. It does spark if it's kicked REAL hard, though.
I'm pretty sure that, I'm not this lucky, but is it common for kill switches to short causing these problems??
How does the kill switch work?? Does it break a circuit when you press the button or make a circuit??
Since I'm probably not that lucky, where do I start testing the other components (coil, stator, etc.)??.......especially since the bike won't start now?? You don't want to put juice to these components do you??
I know that stators and other electical parts are expensive as hell so I'm praying that it's something simple. Thanks for any help.

desertboy 11-27-2001, 03:01 PM First of all take the kill switch off and make sure the wires are connected properly when you put it back on put some electrical tape around the bar where you put it, from what you described this is probably not the problem but it can't hurt. Next look at the wiring of your bike and make sure the coil is connected properly and that the wires have not been mangled in any way. If there is mud or dirt around the connections take it apart and clean it all, once again it can't hurt. Look at your spark plug as well it could be gapped wrong or be the wrong spark plug for your bike. Lastly for what i can think of is to take off the stator/flywheel covor and make sure your timing is not off, this could be the case.
If none of this works you'll have to look deeper but these will normally be the case
convertiyota 11-28-2001, 05:12 AM Thanks!!
Anybody else dealt with similar problems??
mud-magnet 12-10-2001, 04:41 PM both me and my brother had this problem a lot of times with our bikes(mine was xr100 and a xr80, my brothers is a 77 XL125) every time it was the CONDENCER......its a litle round thing, should be close to the coil......looks like a piece of pipe with 1 wire comming off it, and it should be about 1-1.5" long..... not too farmiller with CR but its still a honda......i sold my bike last year now got my SAMURAI.....brother still got his though......pm me if you want a pic of what it looks like or you can find me on the general board, and suzuki board......l8r:flipoff2:
smurfsdad 12-10-2001, 04:53 PM the kill button grounds the lead. what your describing other than the weak spark is symptoms of low compression. a dealer can test the stator and black box easily, should be around half hour shop time. to mudmagnet, his cr doesnt have a condenser like your bike
dog walker 12-10-2001, 11:39 PM My first guess would be either the spark plug or the coil. First replace the plug (the old one could be dead) If that is'nt it, try Ohm'ing out the coil. In most cases the coil on your brothers RM250 should be close to the same, so you could try his.
Just a side note, the coil on my 82 RM250 died, so I used one off a 89 CR250 and it works great.

Thanks.......I tried 3 brand new plugs. No dice. With the coil.......if it dies would you still have some spark. Like I said it will only spark when you kick the piss out of it. So if a dead coil won't spark at all that narrows that out. Thanks again.

Thanks, since the bike was down anyways I tore it all apart to put a new topend in it. As soon as I get it back together I'll start testing this stuff out. Hopefully doing the new topend will help with any compression problems if there was one. With the head off your can hear air getting by the rings on the downstroke. Not a ton, but enough to notice it. Is this normal or bad??

Kyron 12-13-2001, 01:27 AM Its late and I cant think soooo....
Behind the plastic cover on the left side of the motor clean it all up with contact cleaner and make sure there is no rust or condesation.
Make sure all other wires are getting a good conection and put die-a-electric gresse in the connections.
The problem is probley only the worn top-end?
smurfsdad 12-13-2001, 04:22 PM The problem is probley only the worn top-end?
hey didnt i say that ?
Kyron 12-13-2001, 05:22 PM :D You did say that first :D ...but I said to clean that stuff behind the plastic cover
smurfsdad 12-14-2001, 05:20 PM we need to go riding sometime, where the hell is Pacifica ?
Kyron 12-14-2001, 08:42 PM Ahhh Pacifica.... it's 20 miles south of San Francisco. On the coast just north of Halfmoonbay... but we like to describe it as 70 miles north of Santa Cruz :D
But I'm moving to Peoria Az... more riding and less liberals
Hey for real.. after every good mud ride or wash session remove that cover and spray it down with WD-40, I had a 87 CR500 that I never did that to and it was a hard startin POS before someone told me to clean it....
