I was wondering if anyone has does this or knows if it is possible. I am swapping out my IFS on my Tacoma with a D44 solid axle. I want an HP diff, so I went and looked at some late 70's ford axles, well there too long and I do not want to have custom axle shafts made. So I was thinking, there are alot of 1980-1990 waggy axles out there and they are the right width for my truck, but not high pinion. So could I have the ford D44 cut down to match the waggy axles? The reason I would want to do this is so I get the HP diff and when I break the axle shafts I can get cheap replacements from junk yards out of waggy's instead of having to order new custom axles.

Your idea has been implemented about 1000 times, it works like a champ.
Go to www.warn.com to get the axle length chart, many combinations of right to left offset exist by playing with right and left axles from different vehicles.
BTW, welcome newbie. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

get the ford with the welded on radius arms mounts and get it cut down to your width. Order moser or dutchman inners that are cut to length and use stock outers. You will likely be breaking ujoints and if you do you will more than likely take out the ears of the outers but the harder inners will be OK. Stock outers are like $25 and readily available in junk yards for less.
Buck up and spend the extra money.

Depending on your tranny and transfer, you may find that with a high pinion front end, you will have to lift the truck a lot to allow a driveshaft to fit clearance wise.
My truck has a 4.3 and 4L60E to Toy tcase, and with a standard cut front D44 just misses at full articulation. I will be adding some bumpstops to ensure the clearance issue.
Yours may not have similar issues, but it is something to think about.

I used a 79 Bronco HP Dana 44, chopped the long side 6". The inner shaft is now stock EB Dana 44 length. I chopped the inner axle instead of buying a new one. It hasn't busted YET. Later year Dana44's have cast C-bushing ears which are a b*tch to grind off if you're going with leafs, FYI. Earlier axles have welded on ears. With the HP, I had to modify my header and engine crossmember for clearance. My driveshaft is almost 0 degrees with 6" of lift.

Call Turnpike Salvage and ask for Lance. He can tell you off the top of his head what he has. He's also, on occasion willing to do a little trading if you got anything good.
Also try and call the gut out at Spradling. REAL nice guy to work with.
If all else fails, I've got a chevy 30 spline 10 bolt I can make you a helluva deal on. :D:D
