I'm looking into swapping a Dana300 into my 93 xj with an AX-15 tranny instead of building up my NP231. Don't know much about the Dana300 but I found some good info in search. I want to make sure I am shooting for the right one. Are there any I should avoid? What year jeeps should I be looking at for them. Who's done it and what what did you learn?

The Down East Offroad kit looks like it has everything needed to basically "rebuild" the tcase as well as the flip:

"We make the Dana 300 Flip Kit here at Down East Offroad in N.C. The kit includes:twin stick shifter(same shifter the AtlasII uses)2 shift rails,1 shift fork, all new seals, input bearing, detent box,2 tap and drill bit kits, 5 brass plugs, vent tube, shift fork pads, detent balls and springs, loctite, RTV and Color instruction manual w/ a speedo gear calibration chart. The kit can be installed with common hand tools. Socket set and a hack saw or sawsall, needed to trim the input bearing retainer. It will bolt up to an AX-15 or NV3550 with no adaptor! You will gain 8" of rear drive shaft length over a skock NP231,and 4" over a NP231 with a S.Y.E. and 1.8" over an Atlas II. The 4:1, heavy duty rear output and the rear disk brake will work and install as normal. The kit is $695. Also no "Special" oil to use, just 80W-90 gear oil, and the speedo adaptor in the YJ's and TJ's will fit directly in the 300! Thanks Robert"

Good info there. The 300 came in CJ from 80 to 86. Some say the shorter version - 80 model - is a little stronger. I've seen the 300 stand up to a 454/400 combo before with no problems. I guess it's all in how it's used/abused.

If you go with the long tailshaft version your speedometer will fit right in. If you go with the short you will have to figure out another way to run the speedometer. The kit is very complete it comes with everything you need to do it. Hope it works good for you. John:)
