: How do I get the damn thing to line up?

I just put in a new poly tanny mount, I put the crossmember back in place, and lowered the jack andthe damn tranny is sitting like 3" to the driver side now...I cant get it to slide over into the correct position. I've tried pushing it with my feet, I've tried pushing it over with a high lift wedged in the frame, I just cant get it to sit down over the holes.

Anyone have any advice on how to get this damn thing to work?
I thought about taking the skid back off, mounting it to the tranny first and doing it that way....would this be wise?

Holes wont line up is the problem. I put a high lift on the side of my frame and jacked into place horizontally...now the prob is it's sitting an inch too far back. I don't have a ratchet strap :(

If your motor mounts are fawked... it's going to REALLY shorten the lifespan on your new tranny mount.

There are two different tranny mounts that I have seen. One has the tranny mounting holes centered over the crossmember holes and one is offset quite a way. Did you compare the mounts before swapping?

I was wondering the same thing- If the mounts are the same I would attach the cross member and then bolt it to the frame I had to leave my cross member down a little( like one inch) to get the bolts started then once they were started I could jack up the crossmember to the frame. As mine was off a little aswell.

The mount that was on there was actually some sort of "slide-in" ghetto 2 piece mount. Totally worthless. But it was a straight down mounting.

I do plan on buying new motor mounts as soon as I get more funding. But right now..budget is limited which is why I'm still on 33s and haven't swapped in my HOT little 318.

Was the mount symetrical? If it was offset just a little, and you installed it 180 out, you doubled the offset. Just a thought.

Great newbie post. :flipoff2:

Now listen up. The first step is to figure out where the tranny should be.

Get two strings, tie washers on the ends.

Tape one string to the pulley on the crankshaft, it should cross the center of the pulley.

Hang the other from the rear output of the transfer case. Again, center it on the shaft.

Lie down in front of the Jeep, the two strings should nearly line up with the pinion yoke on the rear axle. An inch or less out of alignment is normal, three is not.

Folks are telling you to loosen the motor mounts for a reason. Don't forget to tighten them when done.

Oh yeah, you can actually drill the crossmember if you need to...

What model Jeep we talking here?

If it's an XJ rotate the crossmember 180 degrees....common mistake.

Or try rotating the tranny mount?

The mount is symetrical. So I know I didn't mount it backards ;)

Wow I acted like a total n00b when I didn't post what Jeep it is. It's a 76 CJ-7, 258 + TH400/Dana20

The way it seams as if the tranny is "twisted" a little bit. The driver side is higher than the pass now that I look closely. Looks like the motor mounts are completely shot. Off to the Jyard till I can afford some more.
