Is there a way to make a 351w run without all the Ford ignition crap?

I was thinking more like a different distribitor or something. I was given a 78 F-250 4x4, and the wiring is toast. Almost not enuff to say it has wires. Just looking to get it running on the bare minimum.

thanks

There's not as much there to wire as you think. I converted my 302 from points to electronic, and it wasn't that bad. Stick with the electronic "crap". You'll be happier in the long run.

Will a haynes manual or similar book have schematics?

actually I got the instructions from my local Napa. Thay had it in one of their books. Best part was, they had an employee who knew his shiat. I'll see if I can find it anywhere and scan it for you.

drop 300 bucks at DUI(davis unified ignition) and supply a switched 12 volt source.
one wire hook up , hard to fawk up.

there is a second wire but only if you run a tach.
love mine!!!

that sounds like what I'm talking about. Does it replace all the little ignition modules and stuff?

thanks,

underhood you need a battery(12v source) a solenoid(relay to actuate starter) and the dui .
that's not a smartass answer , it's literally all you need.
there's even a write up (small on pg 96) in the aug 4 wheel and offroad.

Heck,
If you're willing to spend some cash check out this option.

They have a new distributor assy for 351W that uses GM HEI internals / cap / rotor / coil. You get the picture. It'd be a 1 wire hookup also (2 if you wanted a tach). Best of all, it's only $200 brand new. I just installed a HEI in my brother's 402 Chevelle yesterday. VERY easy conversion to do and works great.

I'm liking the price on the GM stuff. Thanks for all the help, it may be running before long.

The man does have a point.
My conversion only ended up costing me about 75 bucks I believe, rebuild dist, new duraspark module, wiring, etc.... 5 years later and still haven't had to touch it. Duraspark rocks.

Hey, If all else fails, go to the local junkyard, pull you an old point type distributor out of an early 70's motor, go home and cut all the electronic BS out and PRESTO! extra speaker wire.:D
You just need the hot wire that's already supplied there anyway.

Just a thought.

You could also get an MSD box and wire it into the stock distributer (2 wires). The MSD distributers use the same type of pickup and the factory ford stuff, so it's an easy hookup. I've got that setup in mine and it's worked fine for 4 years.

Get yourself a copy of Chris Jacobs' "The Doctor's guide to ignitions" (I think that's the title, he's the guy that puts out the Jacobs ignition line) Anyway, there's schematics in there that'll show you how to easily wire any ignition module to the stock Ford electronic distributor. I, myself, run the stock Ford distributor with a Chrysler module and Accel coil. Works really good and replacement modules are easier to find than any of the multitude of different modules used by Ford and, according to Dr. Jacobs, are the best modules to use.;) Good luck!
