Will a mustang 5.0 motors bolt up with the truck 5.0 4x4 transmissions(I am alsmost positive that they do)? What transmissions were available from 1979 and 1995? I would prefer a 5 speed or a 4speed w/ granny low. Which are the best? Which suck? I want the tranny and t/c combo to be fairly short.

I have some Ideas for a project coming up and I need some input.

how do the input shafts sizes correspond between the T5 that is currently on it and the np435?

For example my engines T5 has

1st..2nd..3rd..4th..5th..rev
3.97 2.34 1.46 1.00 0.79 3.70

Input length ......Input shaft pilot diam
.....7.41................. 0.59

But a :"regular" Mustang T5 has this

Input Lengh.....Input shaft pilot diam
7.18.............0.668

Both have

Input Shaft = 1-1/16 inch/10 spline
Ouput Shaft = 28 Splines

What are the measurements of a 435?

Much love in advance for the great info!

I can only offer one bit of knowledge on the tranny part.... if you can find a ZF (88-95) its a 5 speed with a granny and an OD....if you're not driving this on the street and don't need an OD, then I'm useless :D

np 435 w/ d20 tip of input to output yoke is 35" body of np435 is 11"(not including input and output.
you will need to check on the application of 157tooth and 164 tooth flywheels. the np435 was used into the 80's. you can find a bell with the bracet for external slave pretty easy. depending on your application(room for mechanical linkage?) as stated the zf is a 5 spd. not sure what t-cases were used behind it. t-18/19 were available i believe.
i believ 157 tooth was used on mustangs and 164 on trucks. this could give you some starter issues.

Physically any Windsor engine will bolt up to any Windsor bellhousing pattern transmission. The bellhousing pattern has not changed since the Windsor V8 (221 cid) came out in 1962.

Paul, it has, it started as a 5 bolt unit, all the 6 bolts are the same though.
To put a truck tranny behind a 30, you're gonna need a Truck bellhousing, or a toploader bell, a T5 bell will NOT work. If you use the truck bellhousing, you're gonna need the 164 tooth flywheel and proper starter. The input shaft diameter and spline count are the same, however, the shaft legnths are not, the T5 is longer than any other Ford tranny.

I am putting it in a Nissan patrol which has the about the same wheelbase as a B2 (84-6 inches). I am going to be running a 2.3 turbo motor out of a 87 thunderbird TC (190 hp-240fpt) same bolt pattern as the 5.0 just uses a slightly smaller pilot bearing and should give me the room I need under the hood. Length is a critical item for me. I am planning on getting the whole 4speed w/ G-low setup from a truck at the pick and pull. Any ideas on a good year? I am tempted to us a 4.0, manual tranny and t-case from a Ranger/Explorer since I know those like the back of my hand, but I can buy a whole running 87-88 t-bird for 1000-1200 bux and part the tranny and stuff to offset the cost of the swap.

looks like a fun undertaking.
i only have acess to my 435/20 . not sure what the lenghth would be with a 205 .
at 11" i think a 435 is about as short as you'll get. t-18/19 may be 10 1/2" (not sure , that number just comes up in my head)
with less than 200 hp i think ranger/b2/exp running gear will hold up. i got a c-6 outside i'm thinking of trying to rebuild, i can get some measurements off it. also have an a4ld w/t-case, if you want a tip to tail measurement.

Just FYI, a BII wheelbase is closer to 94;)

So my truck is really short. 86.6 inches to be exact. So you can see why I am so concerned amout the length of the drivetrain. It currently has an inline 6 w/ a 3speed and tcase w/ an ofset rear. I would like to keep it a manual. How does the lenght of the Explorer V6/5spd/tcase compare with the length of a stock V8/np435/tcase? I am looking for something that i can peice together for a cheap price(IE, no adapters, minimal machining of shafts). I would love to put something in that has a G/low gear.

i don't have a 5spd to measure. but i can measure the auto and t-case from the 91 ranger. my neighbor has an 88(i swapped in a d35 and 8.8 for him) w/ 2.9 5spd and 1354 i may be able to measure tommorow evening.
whats wrong with the inline 6?

I've gt a 5-speed and an auto for a ranger in the garage that I can measure tommorrow for you if you need it. Just think of your nissan as a CJ5 (the wheelbase is very close), and look at what they do.

I have a 75 CJ5 with a I6 a 465 and a D300.. Very long for a 5, but I am still spring under with fender trimming and 35's. The rear driveshaft is only a total of around 14 inches long:eek:

It may seem really short, but I can still drive it on the street. As long as you aren't planning 20 inches of lift, it will be fine.

There is really nothing wrong w/ the inline six. It is the axles that are pissing me off. The axles are a proprietary set up. They are realy strong, but there are no parts available. No locker, gears, , the rear is offset to the passenger side and the front is drum. I can swap in a rear from an fj40, but then I have to find a fj front w/ disk brakes. It just seemed to me, why not swap in a better drivetrain and axles? The cost shold be about the same if I play the game right. Besides, ever tried to get parts for a 1969 nissan patrol P-motor. Hell, you can't even new brake wheel cylinders.
