Is the tail housing on a 87-90 YJ 231 transfer case able to be swapped with the housing off a later 91-93 jeep 231? I would like to use the housing that uses the short speedo gear instead of the long one. I need to get a 37 tooth speedo gear and it is not made in the long version.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I don't want to use the tail shaft, only the housing. The size and spline count of the shaft should not matter. I may have to put a Jeep seal in the Dodge housing if the shafts are different. I just want to know if it will bolt up.

It should bolt up no problem. The one thing you do need to watch is the rod the shift fork is on internally, it protrudes further out on earlier model 231's, if it sticks out too far you will have to cut it down. No big deal, all HD SYE kits warn you of this. I have done a few odd 231 switch-a-roos, haven't had to cut one yet...

Jeep, Dodge? what? New Process. You said jeep to jeep, where did the dodge come in?

Dodge uses the NP231 in the full size rams. It uses a different speedo gear so I figured I would swap the whole tail housing in.

In a newer development, I have discovered that I can order a 37 tooth gear from Dodge and remove it from the shaft and put it on the shaft in my Jeep negating the need to swap housings.

Unfortunately, Dodge has that part listed as on national backorder and it will be an undisclosed time before they get more.

Any one here have a 94-97 1/2 ton ram with 4.10 gears and 265/85r16 tires that would like to sell me thiers.

At least I do know that there is a solution so I can go ahead and do my axle swap once I have all the parts. All I have left to get is a lunchbox locker for the D30. :D

Thanks for the replies.

Go to a jeep dealership and see if you can get a 37 tooth speedo gear. Or, even better, try NAPA, or any parts store. I got my speedo gear from NAPA. It was 30 something teeth, I forget, but they have them. The shop I used to work for got almost all our parts from them, and when they didn't have something they got it really quick. The stealership is sometimes the only answer, but when they don't have a part, it takes a while to get it. If you worked there and needed a part it would be a different story, but if you are just getting a part through them, they aren't going to have it rushed there. F the stealership, all they want to do is F you. Sorry for my vulgarity, I am not quite sober. Oh yeah, I am in my CAD class right now. It is so easy, and no one even knows I am wasted.
