: Electric fuel pump, return and supply lines

Made some decent progress on the rig this weekend. The most significant progress was on the fuel delivery system for the EFI. I got the hard lines for the supply and return bent and installed (5/16" for the return and 3/8" for the supply) and mounted the external electric fuel pump and filter. Not pictured is the tank vent line. For that I just ran a piece of 5/16" fuel line along side the return line and zip tied the two together. The vent line heads up into the engine compartment to the charcoal cannister.

Looks like we had similar weekends....

Looks like the pump will work well... have to see once I get the TB re-installed.

New "good used" pick-up and screen (to replace the intake pump I tried), new 3/8 hose (I like to make it easy for my self) to engine. Return line is the old, stock "white" vent hose to an elbow welded into the filler neck (that was before I ever dropped the tank to find a port).

What filer are the TBI guys using?? I was having a hard time finding a "good" metal efi filter at the parts store (scanning the shelves and opening boxes), finally settled for a Fram G3 (3/8" in and out). Looks like it will work, but its plastic, and only rated for up to 15 psi... don't expect it will be an issue, but not sure if its a good choice.. It was cheap (~$3).

I run that filter before the pump, then a GM metal fiter 3/8" in/out before the TBI. I'll have to find the part number.

ya, I was actually thinking of moving it in front of the filter... so when the stock IH pick-up screen takes a dump, it protects the pump :D

get the PN of the metal filter your using if you can. According to the book, just about all tbi, cpi, and tpi GM cars and trucks use the same filter (somthing like a G3727 or something, same as all the GM's I drive), with inverted flare fittings in and out... thought about going to the pull-a-part and cutting the fittings off a car and then running them into hose.... the filters are VERY easy to get... I'd like a filter that was about 2" dia max.. Ford has a nice tbi filter, but its like 4-5" in dia...

Rusty...
I picked up a final filter last night on the way home. I went in there looking for a Wix 33481 (same thing as the Fram G3727) but when I looked at it, it doesn't have inverted flare fittings, they are those O-ring fittings like on the newer Saginaw PS boxes. Browsed over a couple in the catalog and found the Wix 33484. Pretty much the same filter except it has some kind of 3/8" push on ends with a plastic retainer clip. Remove the retainer clip and there is a ridge you can slip some fuel line over and use a hose clamp to secure it.

I'm using a Wix 33033 filter between the tank and pump as a prefilter. It's actually a filter for a carb'd engine, but since it's on the suction side of the pump, pressure shouldn't be a concern. It should flow enough fuel but time will tell on that one. DEFINATELY use some kind of filter between the tank and pump. The openings on the stock sock on the pick up tube will allow small animals to pass through it. You need something much finer to prolong the life of your pump.

So what were the results of the in-tank pump experiment. Did it not work very well? or is there another reason why you decided to yank it in favor of an external?
