: SoCal Meet and Greet - Arrowhead/Big Bear

The date has been set as the first weekend in August. My house is close enough to the trail that even the semi-streetable:rolleyes: can stage there and be fine. Just gots to work out the details.

It started out being a bbq with some buds to welcome my Dad to Cali. It's since grown:D and looks like we're gonna have a full on party up here.

So who's down and who's interested in crashing. We can either do the full-on camping thing or I've got a couple lines on some big ol party cabins. I'll take care of this end based upon the feedback here.

Bring it

Voted cabin, but can easily do the camping thing. I'll be on hold for the trip til the other half decides. (Not to mention, I work Sundays, so I'll cut it a bit short anyways.)

can do the cabin thing, or the camping thing. just need a place to park the truck and trailer. I think getting a camping area close enough for this large of a gang would be harder than a cabin. although parking for everyone is still gonna be a bitch!

Cabin would be kick ass though!

Nah, I drive mine from my house to the trail all the time and don't have a problem, it's only about a mile from my house to the trail on all back and dirt roads.

OK, made some calls. I can get a house that sleeps 16 for $550 for the weekend. That works out to around $35 per person for the weekend. My house has got space (sorry not beds) for at least 8 more. So we have room for 24 that way or I can reserve some camping sites up towards Big Bear. I just talked to the USFS and they haven't started the fire ban yet:eek: . Which as a resident scares the poopies out of me. I'll let this go for a little while longer and then make the reservations one way or the other. The deposit for the house is 350 which I'll swing until y'all arrive.

:D

d

Edit: my house is across the street from USFS land, I think we can throw some tents up there for overflow. :D

Non-street legal will be fine.

I didnt vote. I can do camping or cabin. Camping might even be better. I am probably going to have to tow the rig with the motorhome anyway unless I just drive the Bronco up. Wife has to work that weekend, so she is looking for someone to switch with her. Cabin is sounding real good if it has the hot tub:D How far is the camping from the trail? How far is the possible cabbin from the trail?

SanDiegoCJ

One person here. Cabin or camping,
either's fine with me.

JeepRecoveryTeam
06-30-2003, 07:23 PM
The cabin I found does not have a hot tub:( . It's about .5 mile from my house and about a 1.5 to the trail. We would need to stage the trail only rigs at my place because it's pretty high profile around the cabin (more like a house by the golf course).

Camping would be ON the trail potentially at Crab Flats or up out of Fawnskin.

d

Edit: I also need to take in account those with motorhomes and trailers. Maybe Crabflats is the call.

To get to Big Pine Flats, go to the middle of nowhere and hang a left;)

It's up in the Big Bear Area out past Fawnskin. Past the exit of Holcomb Creek. The good thing is Holcomb, White Mtn and John Bull are within a few miles. It's at least 45 minutes from my house. I'll get reservations tomorrow.

Hey, still new here and finding my way around the site. I live in Running Springs so this get together is very close for me. Not sure if my trail rig (77 Ramcharger) will be ready by then, but maybe the wife will let me take out the daily truck (99 Ram 2500)

Seems like people have chosen to camp. Let me know if you need any help setting up or putting vehicles in spots. I've seen camp grounds fill up even with reservations.

I've been through every trail up here in an 86 IFS 4runner. But I still have fun even though the runner has been slightly modified;)

It's not hardcore by any strecth but there are places and lines to play on that can give you trouble. If you have a completely stock vehicle, you have an odds on chance of taking light body damage.

This is more about the hanging out than it is about the wheeling. The good wheeling is about 45 minutes and 40 degrees away in JV.

I actually have to pick my Dad up at LAX on Friday night. I won't make it to the campground until late.

UPDATE

I was out checking out some campgrounds and was getting pretty bummed by the selection. It was getting very difficult, if not impossible, to find a place to suit our needs.

Then we got the 'hookup'. One of my clients introduced me to the caretaker of the Green Valley Lake Community Center. He's got a big plot of Green grass with water and electric and lots of shade. It has a pavillion type setup and an adjacent paved parking lot. It's right in town in Green Valley (very small Mountain town). Right on the main road about .25 mile from the lake which has fishing and swimming and paddle boats.

It's ours for $150 plus the cost of the PortaPotties that he'll arrange for us :D

Multiple trailheads within a .5 mile and far enough from mainstream that LEO's won't be concerned with us anyway.

It's all arranged. I'll post a map and pics sometime soon.

what trails are you planning on running? i just went up there for the first time...excuse me if i don't recall the names correctly. we ran golden mountain just fine. there's one left turn right after the slate rock garden with a big drop from spinning tires that we had to get towed out of. everything else was no problem. we started to go up john's bull? i think that's it...but the fj40 that was leading us died and wouldn't start again so we had to tow it back out. anyways, lemme know what trails you'll be running. maybe if you've got a group of not so hardcore rigs coming as well we can go off on our own run instead of getting stuck and holding you guys up. i'm looking forward to going back up there though, had a great time and got all kinds of dirty. i need to go shower now.

For everyone that hasn't followed the Chit Chat version.

Another Update

I stopped by the camp site today to confirm the reservations. We are definitely set :D The caretaker indicated that it is preferable to park motorhomes on the grass and we can park our rigs in there as well as long as we are careful not to tear up the grass:)

There is an adjoining parking lot that is paved and available for tow rig parking.

As far as $ goes, we're looking at $15.00 per person (kids free) for the weekend (Friday - Sunday) which will include our donation to the Community Center for use of the land and ~$75.00 for a couple port-a-potties. The area has a central water and electric hookup.

I'll take the extra coin and provide a full on BBQ on Saturday evening :D

The Community Center is located about a half mile past the center of Green Valley Lake. Green Valley is a little town located between Running Springs and Big Bear.

Basic directions are:

Come up the 330 North out of San Bernardino
Take 18 East through Running Springs
After leaving the village of Arrowbear, look for Green Valley Road. Make a left

Green Valley is a one way in / one way out town on Green Valley Road, so follow the road into town (8 miles or so), past the lake and look for the Community Center on the right (I'll hang a PBB sign up)

Please RSVP to me via PM or posting up;)

It promises to be a kickass weekend. The trail head is ~ 500 yards up the road and Green Valley is fairly far off the beaten path so all should be fine.

Bring It

Nope, it would be faster for you to continue across the 30 for another 5 or so miles to the 330 North.

Take that to Running Springs and follow signs for Big Bear - 18 East.

Follow 18 for ~10 miles past Blondies Bar and Grill.

.5 mile past Blondies is Green Valley Road - Make a left

Follow for ~8 miles till you enter Green Valley and pass the lake.

Camp area is about a mile up the road on the right.

I'll put signs up early on Friday.

When you coming up Todd?

Is anyone coming up early enough to wheel on Friday afternoon?

Damn, I've got some catching up to do. I'll add the new names in a bit (Livewire, SocalChef and Heywood :D)

Bring food for yourself for everything but Dinner on Saturday. After we get a count and some $$$ my wife is going to pick up some grub and we'll do a big ol bbq. If you would like a special side and want to bring it, have at it.

Krusty,

Directions from the north :D

15 South
215 South
30 East
330 North
Take 330 to the top of the hill (Running Springs)
Follow 18 East (towards Big Bear) for ~5 miles to Green Valley Lake Road
Left on Green Valley Lake Road
~5 more miles of nothing but a few Church Camps and you'll be in Green Valley.

Follow main road (Green Valley Lake Road) through town until you see the Community Center/Museum on the right. You're there :D

If you get to the end of the road and find the USFS campground, you went to far. Turn around and go back 1000 yards.

If you get to Snow Valley Ski Area, you went to far on 18, turn around and go back a mile to Green Valley Road.

If you get to the Ocean, you missed the sign for the 30 and you are probably closer to Mexico then Big Bear. Stop at the nearest bar, get a Margarita and kick back :D

See you on Saturday morning. We won't leave camp on Saturday without you so if you're not gonna make it, call Todd's cell.

It's easier (and quicker) from the north to take 247 south from Barstow to Lucerne Valley, and then up 18 to the Big Bear Valley and around the front of the mountain range to the Green Valley Lake turn-off.

If you can get to the Hammers in JV, it's the same trip except you take the road straight up into the mountains (it wye's into 18) rather than the left turn on to Old Womens Springs Road in Lucerne.

Take 18 past Big Bear lake on the north shore, past the dam, down the hill past Snow Valley, to the Green Valley turnoff (a much more visible sign than the JV Boone Road sign).

Good choice on the CG, it's very dry.

Happy Trails!

That is an option, however it is a steeper climb and he has to go over the artic circle as well. If I were you Krusty I'd take the brown rig off the red truck at the bottom of the hill and have your wife drive one of them up.

The usual

Deep Creek
Holcomb
John Bull

I was thinking maybe combine JB with White Mountain or maybe Gold Mtn.

I know there is a club that has been working on Gold, I had seen mention of opening some optional lines in the big rock slide. I had always thought that was a pretty big NO. Anyone have any details?

Turbro, is there a rock garden back at Deep Creek yet? Anything like the old one?

Well no, not where it used to be.Its now a parking lot, and the trail starts about 100 ft after the end of the bridge. After tht it was alot different than a couple months ago there are alot of deep ruts in a lot of places and some different rocks here and there. heres another shot of the new crossing where the rock garden was.

You need the pass if you're parking your stuff on USFS land, hiking, camping and such. We are not. We are camping on private land and we'll be driving our rigs.

On second thought, if you own a jeep, better get a pass:flipoff2:
