Hey.
I am trying to find some Tracker 5.13 centersections to get the gears for my Samurai, and they'll have to be shipped from wherever I get them. Does anyone know approximately how much the complete centersection weighs (ring & pinion, carrier, bearings) so I can estimate shipping costs?
Thanks!!!
Richard

Hi -
The fronts only or front and rear? The rear Sidekick 3rd members weigh 53 lbs. The fronts I will have to let you know tomorrow.

Has anyone ran the 5.29's made by Reider for the Suzuki's yet? I like the 5.29's in my Toys.

Thanks! Yes, I need to know the front weight too, if you don't mind. :)
I was told that the Tracker front 3rd member is a direct replacement for the Sami front chunk, and that I should also use the gears out of a second Tracker front 3rd member in the existing rear chunk of my Sami.
Does that mean the I cannot use the rear 3rd member from the Tracker (or even just the gears) in my Sami? Or is the resoning that the front gears will have low miles, so those are the ones I should get for the rear?
Thanks!

You can only use the front gears set up in your sammie rear carrier. The rear Kick gears will not fit.

Hi Richard -
For shipping purposes, the weight of a front Sidekick 3rd member in its original aluminum housing is 30 lbs. HOWEVER, you have some careful choices to make here. It is true, 2 front Sidekick 3rd members will fit as they are in your Samurai housing. If your vehicle is a pre '89 it will be necessary to re-drill the flanges. It will also be necessary to at least exchange the rear carrier portion with the Samurai one because the axle diameter in the rear has a larger spline than does the Sidekick or Samurai front. It will also be necessary to use either a diff pin retaining can or some method of retaining the spyder pins because the ring gears have a larger inside diameter and will not hold the pins in place. Having said all of that, I STRONGLY suggest that you do not go that route. The aluminum Sidekick housings WILL BREAK between the pinion bearings!!! It is much wiser - if you choose to use 2 front ring and pinions - to have them set up in Samurai 3rd members using Samurai carriers and diff pin retaining cans. Now...having said THAT, this is also not the best way to go due ot the fact that the Sidekick front R&P size was not designed to handle the load of larger tires and gear reduction in the transfer case when used in the rear. They generally fail within 1 or 2 years depending upon the amount of use. The third and best way to do your axle gear change is to use the Sidekick front R&P installed a Samurai 3rd member in the front, and a Sidekick rear 3rd member (which has larger gears) installed in a Hybrid axle housing. This combination should be reliable for years to come. I know this by my own personal experience, having broken 6 sets of front R&P's that were installed in the rear of my own Samurai. That is why we developed the Hybrid housing - so that we can put fronts in the front and rears in the rear. To make all of this very simple for you, we have a gear change package as described which includes the front 3rd member all set up, the rear 3rd member all set up and a Hybrid axle housing - all ready to just bolt in for $649.00. If you want to add lockers, you pay for the locker and the installation is free.
