My son's friend brought this by today after a recent engine overhaul and paint ( last year).
I believe it a 71 Series 2A? correct me if I am wrong.

I have two questions if anyone could help.
1. how do you adjust the steering box... do you ad or delete shims in the base of the box or some other way? They have lots of steering play that needs attention.

2.
In the 3rd picture there are two hoses left open after the rebuild and install by a local shop,
The silver funnel shaped unit is the cranckcase vent? where does the hose go?
The other hose missing is on the air cleaner .. a small 1/2' type hose that goes where? I assume they attached to each other but could not see it in the manual attached that way?

any help appreciated ...

1. The grill, door hinges, mirrors, hood hinges, bulkhead, windsheild frame, washer bottle radiator, etc etc are all Series three parts which would make it 72 or later. However, Series threes were never offered as softops, or with individual jumpseats in the US market. An original North American spec Series three (or even late SIIA) would have side lights in the fenders and tub. So you've got a bitsa there, but its mostly series 3.

2. The steering is a "worm and nut" type setup. That is to say there is a worm gear and a "nut" inside the box on the end of the column. You can adjust the tightness of the box by adjusting the grub screw on the left hand side of the steering box. You can adjust the preload on the worm gear by adding or removing shims from under the plate at the bottom of the column but that generally doesnt contribute to looseness in the steering. Check to see that the play isnt elsewhere in the system though (swivels, tierods, relay etc).

3. The inlet hose goes to the side of the oil fill tube (or anywhere you would get crankcase fumes (ie breather on top of the rocker cover etc) the outlet goes into a fitting at the base of the carb (at least using the stock Zenith Carb) Its called the PCV valve or the emissions control valve for future reference.
