Drop a pre-runner style bed mounted holder in the back of your rig. Assuming it's not a 5 or earler.

I was trying to keep some room in the rear for my tool box. I'm going to be doing some major cutting of the rear of the TJ this winter and I'm trying to come up with ideas for a one of mount that pivots some sort of way. Right now I have the large Tuffy box in the rear with a rack built on top. I'm gonna get rid of that setup. Just my tool box with minimal extra fluids with the spare in the back.

A friend had his mounted in the back up high between the rollbar but that kinda screws up your cog a little.

How big of a spare are we talking here? If its a 35 or smaller it will lay down flat in the back of the tub.. I know it takes up a lot of space, but its free :D

I was thinking about that. Laying the tire down and putting the toolbox on top of that. Then rachet strapping the two down. I was thinking about mounting eyebolts in the floor. But that just seemed kind of cheesy. And the spare is a 35 ssr.

That way is simple and keeps the weight low and no extra weight from brackets and such.

I'll be moving mine inside within the next week or so. It'll be on the floor and Ill have two pieces of angle iron on either side of the wheel well to form the base for a small storage box and rack.

What about welding a bar across the roll bars and standing it upright behind the front seats that way you still could have room for the tools in the back.

I personally like the way 66cjdeans is setup, But with his setup you cant run a top.. Well you could but no back window..

A 35 will mount over teh wheel wells with enough room for storage on underneath in a five..

What year CJ had windows?!?!? Can I order some from quadratrac?? FAWKERS!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Are you running one of those pre-runner styles? I like the idea of being able to store junk underneath.

uh, not sure what you mean here, sure, quadratec should have them I guess. Just about every CJ made since Kaiser took over had windows in the top from the factory

its 2 bars going across the roll cage, I can keep stuff underneath the tire.

i mounted two bars running perpendicular to the 45* down bars on my cage that attach to the spare tire. leaves plenty of space underneath for 3 large toolboxs and serves as a mount for my spare axleshafts, drivelines, and highlift. my top fits over it and it is removeable so i can put the rear seat in. would not work on a tj with a halo bar though.

It is the one (with the pic) that I plan on doing.

I have 36 tsl/sx on a 15x8 rim it fits perfect lying down and I built a platform over it with that angle that has holes in it and spaced it for my tool box so that I have tie down points. The only pisser is if you blow a tire you unload everything.

Hope this helps;)

I'm doin' a set up similar to what SniperFire is talkin' about. Should leave you lots of room and still be able to put a top on.

I am running 38.5x14.5 swamper on my yj I am going to weld two pieces of angle iron or just square steel across from wheel well to wheel well with a plate w/ a bolt welded on it in the middle of the two pieces going across lay the tire on that and use a big ass wing nut that I got from Rockstomper.com. this setup leaves me room for my shit under the tire and does not get in my way for rear visibility oh and pretty cheap too thats what I would do... I have a 35" tire which I am carrying between my wheel wells and it sucks. It takes up a lot of room and I can't carry much extra back there. I was carrying it on my back door till it ripped the frame through it. So If any of you guys have a bumper and rear tire carrier setup yo want to get rid of so you can put your tire in the back let me know cause I sure want one:D

Some other ideas....

-Do you really need a spare tire? Personally I have don't carry a spare tire anymore. I try and run good tires all the time and also try to run very strong tires. I do however carry everything I need to fix most any tire mishap. I have a few large tractor patches, plus a few normal patches, 2 tire irons, and a bead breaker for my hi-lift that I built. I am confident that I could fix most any trail flat with what I carry. I don't like the extra 100lbs in the back, plus it takes up all that room. Yes you have to do a little more work, and have onboard air, but the back is a good 100lbs lighter without having to have the tire/rim, carrier, etc..

-Another option, why not lay a spare tire down in back and build a system that allows you to use the inside of the tire for storage?

-What about carrying a compact spare :flipoff2:
It would be lighter and smaller, and how often do you need a spare tire anyway?

Tj with 35's... Had mine inside for over a year. Tried to go camping and found that I didn't have enough room for my shit. And thats with a Kilby inside rack.

BEST top just came out with a sweet tire carrier for the TJ.

It opens when you open the tailgate. It holds the tire in tight.
It holds the tire up high. But not tooo high.
No rattles, No squeeks, very strong. With the gate open and the tire on it I can sit on top. without any noticable bending.

It ties into the cage, and the body mounts. holds They claim up to 35, but I know I will be able to fit my new 38 on there. It might rub my bumper a little bit. But B>F>D> :D

It was worth the money to me. It does what I wanted a tire carrier to do. I like only having to open one thing to get inside my jeep. I am lazy... :D

A 35" tire fits in the back of a TJ with no room to spare. Mine is there... whith tools in tool bags stuffed around it. 3/4" plywood deck above that. It rest on the wheel wells. It has a home made center hinge made out of a truck bed tie down bar. I used existing tie downs in the bed to ratchet strap the tire down and to tie the rear deck down so nothing moves if I get inverted.

I got a 4" thick pad on top of that bringing the total hieght it up to the rim of the body in the rear. ohhhh pad?.... thats for my dog... he rides there. All 100 something lbs of him.

This is kind of cool but I dont think id like to have a 38.5" sitting back there. Talk about hog up the entire tub area. Im thinking about making a additon on the cage and slapping it up there.
