: Now I know I'm nutz!!!
RockRover 06-30-2003, 09:44 PM Okay...My mad mind is working again...BAD THING!!! Especially after seeing that narrowed YJ on the general board.
Now that ELCABRO is chopped, I'm...Well...Thinking again...
I've alway's thought that she is too wide....(see where I'm going?). Anyway, I was looking her over, and I'm thining that 1' space between the driver and passenger seats is too much....
What would you guy's think about narrowing (yes, narrowing) the rig about 10"?
Remember, I have no rear bed to speak of...Well none actually...Frame rails would stay the same...All I would do (in minds eye) would be to cut the bulk-head, hood and, if possible, move the fenders in the same distance....Yea lot's of work, but I think it would be a bitchen winter project...And shouldn't be to big of a PITA. Radiator should be able to stay put...Lot's of room there.
Of course things like the master cylinder and header core would be (could be) an issue, but a minor one.
I have always loved the look of JR's bronco and Pat G's bronco narrowed 12'....
Am I crazy?

64rovr 06-30-2003, 09:58 PM heh, i guess that makes two of us... i was also out in the shop tonight taking measurements of the series truck to see how much it could feasably be narrowed.
the problem i came across was the bulkhead- specifically the vents. obviously for aesthetics two equal sized vents would need to be retained. but this creates an issue- no longer can one piece be cut out of the middle, but two pieces have to be cut out from each side. but now you are also cutting out all of your footwell space... not good.
i havent figured out if theres a way to do it yet or not (tomorrow maybe) but i want to keep the same amount of footwell space, and cut space out of the center "doghouse" of the bulkhead.
this will be easier for me, because i plan to retain a 4cyl for quite a while (though not neccessarily a rover unit). so i will require less width in the center portion of the firewall for my engine.
if theres a way to do it, ill try as hard as i can to find it because damn would it be nice to be narrower, even though the truck is already only 66" wide at the body.
FrankenRover 06-30-2003, 10:52 PM Dougy,
Would you be narrowing the axles as well? You might be a bit unstable offcamber if you do (with your tall stance). I expect that you won't though, and it should be okay.
The bulkhead narrowing might be a beatch to line up properly. But everyting else should be straight forward.
Just don't start on this project til I get up there and we do some wheelin' this Summer/Fall.
Later,
Billster
DieLucas! 07-01-2003, 12:46 AM Dove-tail it!
FrankenRover 07-01-2003, 05:24 AM What you been smokin' man, he already dovetailed it.
Billster
And I thought I had problems!!

Apparantly pencil shavings...fawkers ripped me off again.
Thought his rig was a different one...I'll crawl back into my hole now.
Want to borrow my dremel tool.....LOL....:flipoff2:
Look forward to seeing your rig soon.

brianfriend 07-01-2003, 12:51 PM just curious and it may seem like a very dumb question but why would you narrow the truck?

rover- 10lbs of shit
space between two rocks- 5lb bag
RockRover 07-01-2003, 02:31 PM Dove-tail? What's that?
Puffdragon 07-03-2003, 02:36 PM I say do it.
Need help, you know you have a bit of credit due!!
RockRover 07-03-2003, 11:08 PM Cool KC...The hoods up on the rig right now, and I'm looking at the issues involved. Looks like it should be relativley straightforward...Heatercore relocation, and master cylinder movement.
Issues I've noticed (so far) are the under seat boxes will have to be narrowed (no biggie) and then the trans tunnel, and opening around at the bulk-head...Shouldn't be to big of a PITA...
I've just finished watching a RAD! DVD by RP Films of CalRocs called "The War at Cougar Buttes"....SICK, SICK, SICK!!! A MUST for the truly sick at heart! :) See Pig (Dave) at www.polyperformance.com for details.
Anyway, it reinspired me to consider this SICK, and quite frankly, stupid mod! However, the thought of a 90 that's comp narrow just ...Well makes me all tingly inside!!
64rovr 07-04-2003, 07:58 AM why would you narrow the firewall at the footwells? sure it would be easier, but the loss of legroom isnt worth it, at least IMO. i would much rather figure out a way to take it out of the center.
RockRover 07-04-2003, 08:16 AM It was late when I posted Adam....I mean (like you mentioned) removing it entirely from the center, and retaining the footwell space (at least most of it).
I will loose some, about 4" of footwell space on each side because I would need a "new" trans tunnel/dog-house. Without the clutch being there, that's not a biggie.
As far as the vents go...I see no big deal loosing them....Mayby only one in the center, instead of two? I dunno', but all I do know (asside from being nutz) is that the vents (now) are totaly useless...Unless you like extra engine heat dumping on you.
Puffdragon 07-04-2003, 07:22 PM Hey Dougy, We have a good seat box, that we can cut up and play with, since your gonna have to repaint anyways. As for the bulkhead, that will be easy, you just make two small vens, and chopping out a few inches will be easy. You can probably chop ut a few inches on the exiting tranny tunnel, but not to much. I can help making a new fiberglas tunnl if you need as well. Hood should be easy as well, but the radiator and wings will be a bitch. But surely you can figure out a way to do it. You need me to brush up on my Heli arc :flipoff2:
Damn your ruck is gonna be bad ass once your done with it. You have way to much time on your hands doug.
RockRover 07-04-2003, 11:11 PM Okay KC...First question...When are you coming back to NM?
Now, cutting the seat-box(s) should be cake...Plenty of room for my battery (only one)...Heck put it behind the front seat!
Personally I think the easiest way around the vent thing is to plate across both...Nice brushed alum. plate would be trick...Not to mention I wouldn't mind lowering the dash a bit...O'yea and btw, a custom alum. dash is in order here too...That way *we* :) wouldn't have to worry about matching the plastic vener (sp?) of the stock dash top.
Looking at it today, moving the wings in would "just happen" when the bulk-head and hood is cut down...PLENTY of room w/o the inner fender-wells to move them in 5-6" on each side.
Radiator? Well I think there will be plenty of air-flow with a high cfm pusher fan in front.
The toughest part on the 94' is going to be the mass-air flow/hot-wire AND figuring a plentum tube....Not much room there with that pig of a vacuum assist on the master cylinder. Then there is the heater-core (gotta' keep my tootsies toasty!
Damn...I'm ready to start cuttin'...Again!
Seriously, I'll plan this one out for a while...Come late October I'll pull a Frankenrover, strip the body, sharpen the cut-off blades, and start TIG'in! :flipoff2:

Puffdragon 07-06-2003, 01:43 PM Doug, I will be in NM by early august. I will be moving a load to the NEW shop this week, as well as a truck or two. So, I will be in and out of NM for the next few weeks. I am still trying to find a place to live, I really got burned out while looking for the shop space. So, I should be there and partially setup in less than a month. So give the sawzall key to the wife for a few weeks!:flipoff2:
Give me a call if you like Doug 214-478-4190
