: 79 Scout II, What Is This Worth?

A buddy of mine just picked up at an auction, a 79 Scout II with the Nissan 3.3 diesel, NP 435, D300, full and half tops. Some body damage to the left rear quarter panel, but other wise, mostly all straight body.

He wants to turn around and sell due to the low price he got it for, but neither of us has a real idea of what they are worth.
Can anybody give us a shove in the right direction on a proper asking price?

It should be a T19 and a D20. The Non Turbo diesels are real dogs and not very sought after. You would be VERY lucky to get more than 1000 for it. 82 horsepower just doesn't cut it in a heavy ass Scout.

79s didnt come from the factory with a T/D. They only did in '80. Unless a PO, put it in. If it has Square Headlights then it is an '80.

My understanding is that IHC went to the T/D at 79 1/2. So this is labeled as a 79.

What do you mean by "unless a PO, put it in"?
I am not hip to the IHC lingo.

I guess when your rig is only two or three years old you don't have to worry about PO's :flipoff2: :D

If the date on the plate is after June 79, then it is considered to be an '80.

Again look at the headlights. If they are Square then it is an '80, and if they are round it is a '79.

Ok, Old Scout came out and set us straight.
This Scout had a build date of 5-9-80, making it an 80 model. We actually found that before he got there, when my buddy was cleaning it up, and wiped clean the data plate. However, some body has replaced several body panels, including the front wrap, which has round headlamps, hence the belief that is was a 79.
A few details that were brought to light today (I had not looked too hard at it until today).

The rockers are rusted out, which really takes out the whole body tub and make this a rather undesireable vehicle.

As mentioned previously, several body panels have been replaced, including the early model front wrap.

Engine ran killer when the turbo wastegate stuck and the turbo was boosting at 17 PSI:D It unstuck its self after two power pulls, and settled down to 7 PSI. This tells me that the fuel pump is really limited by the aneroid, and there is a lot more fuel available from the fuel pump.

Due to the clapped out rocker panels, this thing is probably better off parted out, at least as a money maker. Old Scout was hinting that it may be worth about $1000 complete, but the various parts could be sold off for about $1500. While I personally respect Old Scout as a much better expert at the IHC world than either of us, this did not sit well with my buddy.
We had a few terse words after O.S. left.;) Some people think they know everything, and are unwilling to see another person's view point, especially if that person basically proved to you that you wasted a bunch of time, effort, and money on a pile of crap.

Old Scout took some pictures with his digital camera, so there will be some pics next week, when we all get back from the 'Con.

Hehehehehe

Another West-Coaster afraid of a little rust! :flipoff2: If you had to look twice (or more) to see that the rockers were rusted, they can be that bad. Definately not enough to declare the tub a goner and start parting it out. This is what my rockers and floors looked like when I bought my Scout. Just put some new rockers on it:

OK, let me clear up on the rockers. They were rusty to Old Scout, to the point that he did not want to deal with them.

They did not look anything like those in your pictures.

As soon as I finish cutting my rockers I'll have a good set of rockers available.
