I was wondering if anyone out there is running a Detroit Locker in the 8.25. I have a 98 so it has the 29 spline shafts. I was also hoping if you all think it can handle 33's and 4.56's.
If not, I see that DriveTrain Direct has a Dana 44 set up with and OX and Disc Brakes for the XJ for around $2900.

The 8.25 should hold up ok to 33's but thats probably it maybe you could get some alloy shafts for it from moser,or Currie. Thats way steep for a rear Dana 44 from Drive Train Dirrect unless of course you cant do it yourself. :D

Talk to Tri-County Gear in Pomona, CA. I'm sure you can get a D44 for way less than that, even with shipping.

Your 8.25 should be ok for 33's as long you dont hammer it to hard. I have 32's on my daily driver and a 8.25" and its seen its share of abuse. Never had any problem yet. There suppost to be between a Dana 35 and 44 strength wise.

I don't know what kind of luck you had with them. They built both my 44 axles, I've beat the crap out of them on the Hammers, Las Cruces, and they've taken it all with no problems. I'm sure you've got your reasons.

You should be fine. I am running the 27 spline 8.25" on 35" SSRs with 4.56 gears and a lockrite and I haven't had any problems yet. Key word there was yet. Probably not the safest set up, but if you are only running 33" tires and you have the 29 spline you should be alright. The key is not to have a lead foot and bounce the rear end too much. Just avoid driving like a maniac and you shouldn't have any problems. I can't wait till Dual 60's and 37" SSRs hmmmmmm............

When did the 8.25 go to 29 spline? Was it in 97? or do some earlier models have them also.

Ok, if the 97 and up of 29 splines hold 35" with lsd, what aboout the dan 30 high pinoion, do you think i´ll hold the 35" locked?

man i knew this tread was old when i read hte first post....Trevor has 60's in it now (ok well about to be very shortly)...
xtoys, good job bringing back and old thread.
EDIT: but yes the D30hp locked will hold 35's pretty well...

i recomend search us a form of knowledge in this type of forum`s, in my country a lot of them came into garbaje with the stupid question or the older`s wheelers flamming them.
I do run from 2 years ago 60 F, but know i want to start a new off road project with a more standard rig, thats why im getting info of the xj 1998 d30 and 8,25.
Any way i have no faith that the 30 shafts hold 35"´.

I had a 27 spline 8.25 in the Milktruck (95 XJ, may it RIP) before I put in the 44. I had 35's 4.56s and a lockright. No problems.. I also knew how to "finesse" it (I think thats spelled correctly). I ran it like this for about 2 years. Also I like the beefy tubes on the axle! Run it, just be light on the go pedal and you should be fine.

im tell in ya the D30 will hold 35's.search , it has been discussed much..... i know a guy that ran a low pinion one on 37's 4.56's and a lockright and he beat the shit out of it... Papastoy can back this up. it just let go recently.... what did he replace it with? a 60? no, a 44? nope , an XJ D30 HP with an OX locker. i assume mainly because he got a good deal on it (actually got it from this posts author, trev) and i know if the LP D30 lasted as long as it did, the HP d30 will do even better. yes the shafts are a bit smaller but you got D44 size joints and most of yor real stress goes to the rear anyway. if you upgrade do it once and go 60 unless you can score cheap parts for the d30 if the problem is you dont wan to put money into the axle....
the thing i dont like are the unit bearing set up... i dont mind not having hubs but id rather it be riding on servicable bearings.

i do run 60`s
and i do a lot of search, discuss about the RC 30 and all that, but if you read carefully you don´t know clearly if you can, is the same us 44 hold 38" in my experience NO, i go 60´s, Toy birfield hold 35" in my expierence NO go bierflieds.
But in small axle´s a have less experince, any way i think i´m gonna try 33x14,5x15 SSX locked F/R
I have researched this, and it is possible to run up to 35" tires on the 8.25. Aftermarket shafts are 20-30% stronger than the stockers. ( stronger alloys ) . Check with Randy's Ring and Pinion. They are who I talked to and they had plenty of ideas to make it stronger.
Good luck with the build.
I miss my '99 classic.

I had a 27 spline 8.25 locked with 34" LTBs and flat out beat the piss out of it no problems. Then once i had my d70 rear ready i put it to the test with 38s and destroyed a carrier :D I now have a 60/70.
Yes the 29 spline 8.25 will hold up to 35s just fine especially since the lowest gears offered are 4.56s.
