I briefly viewed a '66 Scout today I saw at a garage I was at doing business. It is owned by one of the mechanics. I know nothing about scouts except that they're almost as cool as Jeeps ;) and offroad just as well. This is the first time I've even read anything on ths forum. I hang at the general and Jeep forums. I offered the guy $400 as it sits and he said he would consider it. The engine runs (according to him). The transmission and t-case are out (still together) b/c he is in the process of replacing the clutch. It is a 4 cyl, the tranny is 3spd, the t-case is a twin-stick Dana 300 ( i believe, it had the Dana logo on the side and looked similar to pics I've seen). The body was rough but didn't see any massive holes. The ?'s I have are:
1. Is it worth 400?
2. If I decide to investigate it further what are any problem areas I should investigate?
3. What are the axles most likely (44s or did the 4 cyl's come with smaller axles?
4. Would any of you like to know where exactly it is so you can buy it before me?

Not a Dana 300----probably a Dana 18, maybe a Dana 20.
Not Dana 44 axles---more than likely Dana 27's f&R(slight chance of a 44 in the rear)

More than likely a 152 4 banger.

Depending on the rust I would probably pay 400.

A pre-smog title alone is worth 200 in cali

How are Dana 27s for strength? And does anyone make parts for them (ie lockers, HD shafts, etc). The Dana 18s, & 20s are still all gear driven correct?

I would still like to know if there's any problem areas I should look for.

Thanks for teaching a newb

The problems ARE the axles---they are crap and weak although I wheeled one for a little over a year. Closed knuckles and terrible brakes---no one makes anything other than replacement parts and good luck finding those.

Problem areas-----axles and typical rust(floors, wheel wells, rockers etc.) Some people think the motor is a "problem" but I happen to like the crap out of the 4 bangers.

Both TC's are gear driven( 18 has offset rear output, 20 straight through)
