: NEED HELP FAST!!!!!!! front diff problem....
RoverCOX 07-02-2003, 01:54 AM I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden i heard the most god aweful noise. It was a loud annoying whine. I pulled over only to find that the front diff has a loud grinding noise. So i took the front driveshaft off to take the pressure off, and grease and everything has been blown all over, and the pinion mount right at the back of the diff is loose and crunches. I need some help with whtat this is and i also would love some quick fixes. I beleive it is the bearings but dont really know. I have to drive my truck in the next couple days, its my everyday car so i need to get this fixed fast. If anyone has any info please let me know.
Thanx

Not looking good!
If it's the drive flange that is moving (where the propshaft connected on) then your right, it's the bearing at least. Lets assume that is all, then what you could do is to pull out the 2 cv / 1/2 shafts from both sides because when you drive it's forcing the diff to spin. Once these shafts are out, then you can drive around in rear wheel drive (as you are now) without spinning the front diff.
I've not heard of one of these going before, so dont be suprised if you find something else caused it.

I lost one, but only after bending my shaft.

Leafsprung 07-02-2003, 07:21 AM If you have to drive it, follow Mervs advice; pull the front axle shafts and reassemble and nothing will spin in the front end since youve already got the prop off. You wont be able to tell the extent of the damage untill you pull the diff out so theres really no point speculating about what it "might" be. From the sounds of it youre not going to get it fixed fast unless you have a new third member to drop in on hand.

I concur with the above statements about pulling the front axles. Be prepared for the truck to drive like crap in only RWD!

Gotta' disagree with you there man!
I think what happened is you lost the x-pin in the diff...Been there done that. Still moves, but not very well! :P

 I meant that when you disconnect the front Driveshaft and remove front axles the truck handles terribly with only the rear axles driving it. It seems that the front axle pulling makes it easier to handle.
RockRover 07-02-2003, 04:06 PM Agree with you there...That a 90 will handle a "bit" better with full time 4wd, but with my part time case, I've honestly noticed NO difference in handeling...And it's not like crap either! :flipoff2:...Except now I can spin 'brodies'with the best of them! :P Something I've ALWAYS missed being able to do with full time 4wd.

m016324 07-02-2003, 08:58 PM I say take it apart. Sounds like it could be several things and it would all be guessing it could be the cross pin it could be a bearing (but probably not since you have the crunching sound) As for the driving I drove around with just rear wheel drive for about 6 months and I have been driving on front only for about a month. It handles a little better only in front drive but it has real bad torque steer. Not that that really matters to you since it sounds like you are just trying to get it back on the road but just some more useless observations

I think I may hold the record for driving in rear wheel drive (unvolenterally). When on a trip last year, I popped a front 1/2 shaft. I could'nt get it out of the diff due to some twisting of the splines (yes, it was was an old 10 spline). anyway, I ended up removing the propshaft, opposite 1/2 shaft and the cv. That meant the shaft just lay there not turning.
I drove home in rear wheel drive, and I have a detriot in the back ( and thankfully, ashcroft's heavy shafts). I did'nt notice the handling all that much worse!
where was I? About a few hundred miles into the Sahara Desert in sand dunes. All I could do was drop the tyre pressures to about 12psi and she drove out in rear wheel drive. And all the way up tunisea and all the way up France to the ferry home.
Guess I ran up about 600 miles in rear wheel drive.
