Many vehicles in the 70's and 80's have that. It was an effort to remind people that the speed limit was 55 mph. It wasn't until the late 80's and early 90's that speed limits were allowed to be raised back up to 65, 70 or 75 mph. It was an effort to reduce highway fatalities but mainly was a effort to conserve fuel during the 70's. It's not a tach and it's not a redline.....

Diesels were on the road more? Most companies went with diesel trucks because of the better preformance and mileage. IH made 18 wheelers back then right?????

what gears did diesel scouts have? assuming 3.54s and 30" tires, 55mph would put the motor around 2200rpm, which is right in the upper end of suggested cruising speeds for a diesel.
