It was an effort to remind people that the speed limit was 55 mph. It wasn't until the late 80's and early 90's that speed limits were allowed to be raised back up to 65, 70 or 75 mph. It was an effort to reduce highway fatalities but mainly was a effort to conserve fuel during the 70's. It's not a tach and it's not a redline.....
