: Custom American SOA Troopie
dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 01:09 PM This is a photo of Daryl Noorda's Troopie, a SOA 100% custom troopie which was built at the Cruiser Outfitters shop. I just upload pics of this and some others to Kurt's site so I thought I'd post 'em with talk of all of these Troopies. It is one bad ass rig, probably 7" lift, custom bumpers and roll cage, 35" MTRs, running on a 2H diesel with 12H-T factory turbo, H55F, cable lockers... Kurt can fill in on the rest of the details, that pretty much what I remember about it...
One time I tried to snap a pic of it and Daryl almost took my head off. Nice guy be very protective of his truck. Rightfully so ;) Rumor had it if you were caught posting a pic of his rig on the Internet you would be on his "list" and could find yourself buried out in the desert sometime. With a distant but in by book "acceptable" OK I'm gonna post em....
The only two digital picts known in existance, other than maybe a few Tolman has... ;):

And the other with the top off. Is that a Mulleted Bruter standing in front of it?

GreenPig 07-02-2003, 01:16 PM that truck is such a fucking piece of shit. blame it on the Mormons.
I never met daryl, but the quote stuck in my head. :D
Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 01:29 PM Thanks Andre, remind everyone that I've got picks......if I end up in the desert, you're coming with me.:flipoff2:
I will say this. Daryl's truck is hands down one of my all time favorites. I can't think of anything that I really dislike about it. Some of you may not know but Daryl did a gigantic portion of the work on my 40. I've wheeled some good trails in my 40. I wouldn't say I've been on anything "extreme" like a lot of the rockcrawling comp stuff, or Proving Grounds or stuff like that, but I've wheeled lots of 4+ stuff in Moab and around Utah, I've been through the Rubicon with my 40, so it's seen some good workouts. (big knock on wood) I have yet to break on the trail!
Daryl could be pretty abrasive at times, but the dude knows how to build cruisers!! Wish he was still around.
CaverInaCruiser 07-02-2003, 01:31 PM Sounds like Daryl to me... Heheheheh.
<Smacked Down by DA MAN>
Stupid frnch jackasS 07-02-2003, 01:37 PM Actually, to my eyes it looks more like a MWB 43/46 series on which one would have built a factory style hardtop than a "true" 45 troopie, which wheelbase would be 10" or so longer...
anyway, it looks nice... high but nice ;)
I would have put the axle 10" rearwards, but to each his own :D

IIRC< it was originally an FJ45 SWB pickup, which had the bed and cab connected together. Darryl did an awesome job building his, and MANY other trucks. He was abrasive, brash, and would throw wrenches at you if you irked him, but he was fun to hang around nonetheless.

Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 02:22 PM So what will I get out of it if I post the pics I've got? Besides a trip to the desert.
dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 02:30 PM Great, now I'm in this alone. OK, me and maybe Kurt ;)
Seriously post if you wish. I, um, uh, will promise to be a nice guy  ;) :flipoff2:
dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 02:31 PM Better yet if you didn't order any I'll give you one of Land Pimps stickers... I also have a pretty bad ass collection of stickers from all over the place (skiing, cruisin', you name it) if you don't have one of the TEJE ones...
Deal?
Stupid frnch jackasS 07-02-2003, 02:35 PM don't be such pussies, guys, and post the pics !!!
:flipoff2:
Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 02:35 PM I'll take one of LandPimps stickers if you're serious. Do you need the pics that I have?
Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 02:39 PM I had to look around but it looks like I've got over a dozen pics of Darrell's truck (including the infamous Moab Rim rollover shots). Do you want them for Kurt's site or what?

Kaderabek 07-02-2003, 02:49 PM Where did Darrell go, and did he take his truck with him?

Kaderabek 07-02-2003, 02:58 PM Glad to notice this thread and learn about your shop, Kurt. Never knew, looks first rate. You should consider a full page ad in that magazine, what's it called, Toyota Trails...?

What's his problem with having pics posted on the net? You'd think he would be proud of his accomplishment ? :(
Andy
BTW Andre, how's the 55?
dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 03:39 PM 55 is coming along. Sort of at a stand still, waiting for some parts. Got most of the front SOA done though! Just got to wait for the high steer setup to come in and weld it up....

It wasn't that he didn't like people to have pictures of his truck, he just wouldn't let them come down to the shop and take pictures of his mods, next thing you know they had a measuring tape out and were pulling all the spec's off his spring overs and power steering, etc....
He won't care about pictures of his truck wheeling being posted... :D
dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 03:47 PM I'm not sure why he didn't want pics of it on the 'net. But somehow I envision Nolan going " *Right Click, Save* LOL and maybe after that whole JoeJoeJoe catastophe he didn't like the idea of pics of his rig getting around. Then some schlep prints it out, takes it to another shop and says "I want one of those." Kurt and I saw it the other day with that red Canadian 45 on the Mog axles. Some random guy with a 45 bought Mog axles and looks like there will be two running around now... But I say whatever...
Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 03:53 PM A red 45 on mogs here is SLC? Hmm.

Its not red....... yet.......
But it does have two steering axle mogs.... and all the works..... coils in the works, etc.... Dre' and I went over and took a look at it... pretty sweet. the family owns several cruisers including a FJ40 on a TJ chassis....
dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 03:57 PM This one will be green... It's right around the corner from Rock Logic 4x4 (that new, mostly minitruck stuff shop)...
cruiseroutfit 07-02-2003, 03:57 PM In those pictures you can see Spunkys old cruiser (Now Paul Mays) , Johns mog and Andy's FJ40....
Wow have things changed a bit... :D

WHAT THE? like he would find me and bury me in the desert, anyone afraid to post pics send them awwn, ill keep your identity secret and take the wrap :flipoff2:
Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 04:07 PM I'm not scared to post pics, I just know how Daryl felt about pictures of his truck and I try to respect that. If Andre's got permission to post 'em, super.
I'll say it again, it's an awesome truck. it'd be great for a full write up in Trails, but hell will freeze over before that happens. :flipoff2:
First off, That truck is fawkin pissed! Me likey!
Second, I call bullshit on this pic:

The angle that the truck is at is bunk. That ledge isn't nearly that steep. The old tilted camera syndrome! Check out the shorts on our cute model, hanging to one side! Gravity doesn't lie!
:flipoff2:
RHINO 07-02-2003, 05:16 PM wow i was going to build an FJ55 pick-up, a real p-up with closed cab and seperate bed, but with all these pics of troopies, how does everyone think a 55 based troopie would look??
just off the top of my head i think i would move the rear axle back a bit, like 112 " wb or so, make the rear doors dissapear of course and replace the windows on the side with steel panel and ad the troopie type sliding windows, and then to top it off a raised roof like the troopies would be killer.

dieselcruiserhead 07-02-2003, 09:03 PM Seriously! Thanks Land Pimp...
Slowerthanu 07-02-2003, 09:14 PM I miss Daryl and Andy, I really miss Andys dog. I got my Cruiser hopelessly stuck in the mountains once and Daryl and Andy came up and got me out. I alwys got along with Daryl though.
i didnt know him nearly as well as you guys do, but I liked him none the less, I have a few pics of his Cruiser though. I also have about 200 "Jeeps are Shit" stickers in my toolbox, he handed them too me one night and told me to stick them on a bunch of Jeeps.
  On that Troopie roll... what would have happened had that rock not been there?....Colorado here I come?
Is this the guy that had his daughter in with him?...all were OK as I remember?
Box Rocket 07-02-2003, 11:03 PM The way Darryl and Andy described it to me, they were coming down Moab Rim and he came off one of the ledges a bit crooked. It didn't help that he was trying out some 34x9.50 swampers that were WAY TOO SKINNY for that truck. He went over and was on his third roll and picking up speed when they hit that rock, that finally stopped them. They were still a little ways from the cliff, but if you know Moab Rim, you know that it's not that far to the cliff and if you get there, it's a 200'+ drop to the road or the Colorado river.
He had his girlfriend with him and she got a good knock to her noggin. I think they took her to the hospital to get checked out but all in all, everyone was ok. VERY lucky, plain and simple.
BJ On Roids 07-03-2003, 01:01 AM third roll and picking up speed? with that little damage? DAMN!!!! looks like a steady slope downhill too. Did I read on here of someone going off the edge there once?
Box Rocket 07-03-2003, 09:10 AM I don't know of anyone going off the edge on Moab Rim, but I have heard about someone going off the cliff at the top of Golden Spike. Many places along that cliff are a good 1000' drop, but I was told that the guys that went off "only" dropped about 400'. Needless to say, they didn't make it.
The other one that's pretty famous is the Blazer going off the side of Lion's Back.
