The Lockright for the 9" re-uses the factory side gears. That's why it's the same part for both 28 and 31 spline axles. So you can swap it between 3rd members no problem.
BUT (and this is the important one), the 28- and 31-spline 9" carriers are different. The 31-spline carrier has a four-pinion design, where the 28-spline unit only uses two. I'm pretty sure the 28-spline carrier side holes are too small for 31-spline shafts, too.
So I think your best bet is to swap carriers when you install the Lockright. It's the same amount of work anyway, since you have to set the carrier preload & backlash after putting the locker in, so it shouldn't be a big deal.
Email me offline if you've got more q's - I'm not here very often.

No, they use the same carrier bearings so, you should be able to just swap side gears (when I converted my 28 spline Detroit Locker to 31 spline I just swapped side gears in that, too:) ) either way, if you're going to install a Lockrite in a 9" it's really important that your side gears are in good condition for it to work right. Also you might take the time to smooth out any rough casting flash (to prevent any stress risers) on the case, I had mine split in in two when a crack started at one of the, cast in, holes:eek: And, btw, not all 28 spline carriers are of 2 pinion design (however EBs were:confused: ) mine was a four pinion ( I think it was a passenger car third member) And you don't have to reset the backlash and pre-load if you mark everything before you take it apart then put it back the way it was. I've done it plenty of times;)
