: family cage vs cross bracing

Well I was going to post this on the other cage thread, but I am hoping this one will have some real tech, and I didn't want to spoil the party over there.

When I bobbed and tubbed the scout, it was built around keeping the rear seat. The B hoop of my cage mounts at the edge of the step, basically right at the seat. Now I am thinking I really want the cage to be more bomb proof, but I am not sure how to put good cross bracing without without putting an X right in the face of the rear occupants? I am planing a shoulder-shin bar and a cross brace across the dash as well as an X brace for the front halo, I am only worried about the b column??

Ideas or better yet pics??

Instead of an X how about a /\ ?

Do you have any pics of your existing cage?

I've got the same dilemma, I need the back seat for the kids, at the same time I don't want to put potential face smashing bars in their path.

I've thought about turning the seat around this would allow the backs of both the front and rear seats to be protected by the X brace. Or a single bar behind the front seats for harnesses and the X bracing behind the rear seats. No matter what I will make sure the boys are as safe as possible from contacting the bars and I am seriously considering making them wear helmets during trips. Currently they are both in car seats with good side and rear head protection. Once they both move out of the seats then I'll look to add a rear seat with good bolsters and harnesses.

Phase one of the cage looks like this. At least there is some bracing at the top of the cage.

Also I plan on running these harnesses, which are 2"x2" with standard auto type buckles.

my only answer, & it is what I am a gonna do, is just use a main "double hoop" spaced fairly close together with short tubes cooecting them to each other giving additional support. mNice work tho JdJanda

That is exactly what I did, but I only have one rear seat. I'll try to get a few pics this weekend for ya.

does a /\ style brace really provide a lot of lateral support? Seems like it would provide a big pivot point around which the b hoop could fail?

I like that, prolly not a good as x bracing the main hoop, but it seems like a good compromise. Especially

Can I ask why you bent the piece coming off of the b hoop? Why not create a straight x from the b hoop out to your runners? seems like it would be stronger?

If I thought it was any less safe then a traditional X-brace then I would have not used it. Also it does a better job of covering the rear seat. The two bars from the 90 go directly over the two spots of the rear seat. Also look at where the transfer of force would be, if one of the rear legs where exerting force it would have to deform the 90 which would also pull on the other rear leg. I'm confident it's safe.

BTW lets see some of your cage work :p

That's funny.
I was Auburn, CA today & saw a stock Suzuki Samari with the top off.

It had a cage made ot of wire the same size as the hard top would be.

I couldn't tell if it was for a dog, or to keep people from taking crap...
