The Katipo, an all terrain vehicle or ultra high mobility vehicle, as its
inventor Pat Hansen knows it, started life as a prototype farm vehicle and
was being touted as the ultimate fast response vehicle for the military. Pat
Hansen has a strong background in open wheel motor racing chassis design and
engineering and, while living in England, built a series of reconnaissance
vehicles which could carry weapons and surveillance systems and be dropped
into a war zone by helicopter or transported on the back of a small truck.
The Katipo can climb slopes of more than 60 degrees and reach 120kph fully
laden, tackle side slopes of more than 50 degrees, operate effectively in
deep sand or soft ground, negotiate obstacles more than one metre wide and
half a metre high; ford half a metre of water; and travel well on sealed
roads. The vehicle's performance abilities come from its unique cantilever
suspension and space frame tubular chassis. Combined with the very low
centre of gravity, a horizontal suspension system makes the Katipo
practically unrollable. The 1200kg vehicle offers a very smooth and
non-jarring ride on rugged terrain. This is good for driver and passengers
but is also a bonus for safely transporting delicate equipment. It can also
motors up near-impossible slopes. Katipo predecessors, were used in the Gulf
War by British Special Forces. He designed and built the Katipo in a shed on
his Helensville farm and tested it on the steep hills of the property.
