: DMV bending me over.

Was recently told that if i didnt have my rig non-opd that they would issue a junk status on it and it could never be registered again (rebuilt salvage).

So I tow it down, get the vin verification, etc.... and get bent over for $847 at DMV for 30 different fees and penalties. :flipoff: :flipoff: Their illogical agency is sooo backasswards, its hard for any person to talk sense to them...

To non-op a salvage vehicle that was not originally mine (toyota lease):
First you need to register it in your name, but you need a smog/ light/ brake inspection first to do so. So basically you cant get the non-op till all repairs/ inspections are completed and the registration is transfered to your name. In which case you wouldnt need the non-op, because the vehicle would be running and streetable.

Im surprised no one has gone postal at a DMV office. They just piss everyone off.

:flipoff: DMV. I seriously wont be able to buy christmas presents this year.... but i will have a registered truck finally.:bounce2:

You actually paid that??? I just go to different dmv's and or clerks 'till I get the answer I want. It's always worked out for me. They never say the same thing twice, especially office to office.

That is sooo true! I finally found an office in Tracy that has employees you can work with.

Sounds like it's to late for you Chuck:( Sorry man!

i actually went to 3 different offices and did get different answers regarding other things from them. I did get a few hundred in fees nocked off from the total ($1300 something) which was a miracle in itself. The reinstatement/ salvage fees were about $200. Then i had to pay back taxes from when i bought the truck back.

What really killed me was that the reg expired and a renewal was sent to toyota (not me). Since i couldnt renew it w/ out the smog/ inspection etc....i got killed on late payment fees. It makes absolutely zero sense that you even have to pay registration fees on a vehicle which has been totalled in a car accident and isnt driveable. It should just go to an automatic non-op status w/ no reg fees due.

Im just happy i got it registered and can drive it around now.

I can understand some of their issues for back fee's like the
past-due reg issue. BUt, you could have tried to get a letter from
Toyota stating they had control of documents at the time of
expired registration.

You should have been able to obtain a non-op right after doing
the transfer of ownership. (They can't make you smog the
vehicle if it doesn't run) I did this with my cj7 when I bought it
(It was a non-insurance covered underhood burn vehicle) but
still has a clean title.

every DMV employee I've ever met has a different spin on
things... I've actually only met one guy at DMV who can
actually "help" you... BUt just as well, if you try anf give him
shit, he gives it right back. (just noticed this recently at
his dmv office when some a-hole guy was giving him a hard time.
I just stood back and waited in line smiling......

I recommend you try DMV offices in smaller rural areas. They
tend to be more forgiving and understadning than offices
in suburban areas.......

Good luck, at least your truck is reg'd now..

WHen are you folks in Cali going to start fighting the GOV BS with the DMV? That's a bunch of crappola!
When I went to register my 75 that it took me a year to put together the only thing I got questioned on was why I didn't register it withing 30day's of the sale. I tell the DMV lady "it hasn't been drivable for a year." She say's ok and asks for the smog paper work, hand her a smog check, pay my $24 tag fee and walked out with a tag in hand.
Worst one I ever had to deal with was my Supra that I bought not running that had been repo'd. The company didn't give me the repo documentation so when I went to register it they needed that. Tracked that down (thankfully it was financed localy). 20 minutes after ariving at the DMV the 2nd time with that document I walk out with a tag.
You folks put up with way to much crap. You need to start voting some folks out of office and voting folks in that are going to fix that mess. I can agree with the stricter smog laws but that BS about a non drivable car is uncalled for.

Oregon tags?

yeah, you're gonna make plenty of freinds with that game using
a california driver's license... it won't work for very long.....
About the only way to semi-cheat the california system is to
register your vehicle in a non-bi-annual smog inspection county.
then all you do is pay your tags every year. BUt, you still have to
smog the vehicle when you first buy/register it..

As for voting people out of office??? yeah, right.... It's a huge
government agency... there's no way in hell you're ever gonna
win that fight. Even "SEMA" has a hard time, and they've got
lawyers and huge auto parts companies paying fees...

DMV sucks in california. period. You would have to dedicate
your family fortune and your entire life to trying to make it
change.. and I just want to drive my cars and trucks, not
be a lobbyist...

dmv is too funny to me. when i bought my new truck and had the title switched into my name, i put down my mom as some one who could sell it also. well i didnt get her signature in time, and went to the dmv anyways. they told me that i need her signature. i told them to just forge it and i dont need her on it, and because i wouldnt see her for some time to get the signature. they said if i wanted totake her name off the pink, i would need to hve her sign her name and stae tht she wanted to be taken off of it. i told them i wrote her name down my self, she had nothing to do with it. and they said no you need her signature and permission. so basically i could have written chris farley, or elvis under it, and i would be screwed cause i would never have gotten their signature. i dont get some of the gay as rules.

I went through the DMV challenge and they suck. I bought my jeep back from a total and it took me a year to get everything taken care of. the biggest PITA was the VIN check. I did find out though that you can flag down a CHP and they can do the inspection for you for free. It says so in the paper work. If you go to the inspector they charge you. What a racket.

BTW: don't go to this link

Getting my VIN inspection was pretty fun.
On the DMV paperwork it says: authorized auto club, inspection facility, DMV office, or ANY PEACE OFFICER.

Well not one damn peace officer wanted to do it (or knew how). I called 3 sherrif stations, and 3 CHP stations and was given stupid answers by all of them. CHP says only the 'CHP inspection facility' can do it. Call them and they say anyone can do it. Tell a sherrif that and he says the CHP doesnt know anything and their lying....etc....
Finally gave in and towed my rig to the Walnut Creek DMV to get inspected.

I had to chase down a CHP officer to have it done. He tried to tell me that he couldn't do it and I showed him the paper work. He reluctantly did the inspection. I was going to get in his face if he didn't do the inspection for me. I was pissed by then. To this day I don't know if I will ever do another salvage vehicle. Even though I got the vehicle for free from my insurance company. =0) Ask Freaksta about what I went through he knows.

BTW chuck, click on the link above.

I think you fellas need to move to the land of the free. Here in Tennessee I walked into the DMV with the title after I bought and then after getting nailed on 8% sales tax walked out 20 minutes later with a new registration and tag.
In Tennessee there's no inspection or smog. I know people around here who convert their mid 90s efi hotrods to carbed and don't have to worry about a thing.

<FONT COLOR="Red"> The DMV can (and WILL) bend you over every chance it gets.. They are a monopoly and you are it's captive audience.

I had a friend that hated the DMV so much he would never pay them a dime. So how did he have a car? Easy... You go out and shop for a cheap junker that has it's tags paid up for the whole year. Just drive it (without ever registering it) and park it where you want. Keep all your parking tickets in the glove box. See if you can get enough parking tickets during the year to keep the lid from closing. :D If you get pulled over tell the cop you just bought it and haven't registered it yet. When the tags expire, you abandon it in a parking lot of some business that delt you dirty in the past. Go buy another one and start all over again! One night we walked away from a Bonneville that he had with a 428 in it. It he hadn't been living at home with his folks while going to college, we would have been doing some serious parting out..:D:D:D

Now that I am an adult, I obviously no long condone such behavior. By the way, the friend who did this went into law enforcement. :) </FONT c>

Oregon is looking better every day :D

I dont have emmisions testing at my address. I dont have to pay taxes and fees for cars that dont run. I dont have to pay back licence fees if I let the tags expire.

$30 for title change
$30 for 2 yrs of tags

and it goes down if you get the right person in a good mood :D

My '81 Toyota 4x4 with a '72 Chevy V8 engine with headers, NO CAT, and Glass Packs is LEGAL here. Try that in cali :flipoff2:

:flipoff: KKKalifornia

And even if you do live in an emmisions area, you dont have to pay UNTIL YOU PASS.

Also, I have never heard of anyone getting a safety inspection.

Nah, that was easy to pass :flipoff2: It's when you drive a 1-3 year old car in perfect shape they won't pass inspection because you have a 1/2" tear in your wiper blade! That's what pisses me off. Then I drive my 79 POS Toyota in and it passes NP, and it's a death trap!! At least CA has great places to wheel :crybaby2: :smokin:
