I'm building up my new rig now that my 4runner is sold.
I picked up an 87 suzuki sami (basicaly for the registration)
I've got toy axles 5.29s and lockers 36" swampers ect...
I'm building a frame for it. :smokin:
I've got an option to buy a 4.3v6 (265hp) out a 97 mercruiser(it is a chevy) this is cool cuz its a vortec but setup to run a carb. Its going to be running on propane (have the parts to do this) but I'm kinda lost as to what tranny tcase combo to run.
I'm thinking of the 420 tranny but don't know what tcase to run.
I'm on a budget so adapters ect gotto be kept to a minumum.
I need a good crawl ratio so something with a doubler option or gear sets would be nice. thanks

I am running a 4.3 , 700R4, D18 combo. It did require an adapter, and you don't need ridiculous gearing.:D

I am planning on 4.3L, TH350, and Toyota dual cases.

Unless you want to run something that came behind a 420 in the first place, adapters are the only choice you have...

I am running a 4.3 with a 4L60E to Toy case with 4:1 gears. The adapters are spendy though, about a grand. I have 4.88 gears, but probably don't need them. 4.10's would be fine.

don't mind buying an adapter just not going to spend $1000 bucks on one.

I've been looking into a similar project. From what I can tell (someone feel free to confirm or deny this), an SM420 will bolt right up to the 4.3 without any adapters. After that, a d300 makes a good mate and the adapter for the 420 to the 300 can be gotten from Novak (www.novak-adapt.com) for $455.

From the people I've asked, this is about as stout of a drivetrain as you're gonna' get ... working on a budget.

the 4.3 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as any small block chevy so the SM465 will work also. If you want a heavy duty t-case a NP205 is the strongest out there but the low range gearing is not so good. If you can find a SM465 to NP208 adapter at your local salvage yard you can use the Dana 300 t-case as long as you buy the new input shaft for it from AA for about $150. Cheaper than buying expensive adapters and still almost bulletproof. There is also a 4 to 1 gearset available for the D300 or if you use the NP205 you can run a doubler with all salvage yard parts and the kit from Off Road Design.

the sm420 or sm 465 to toy t-case adapter is only $465 from ott industries. I like the toy case cause it's strong and you can get so many dual t-case and low gear options.
