The best price was through Jegs.
They were 2-3 hundred less than any Chevy dealer here in Ca.
Plus since it came from out of state there was no sales tax.
It was $3,300 after the shipping charge. That was a huge chunck of change to fork out at once, but to build one would have cost me more.

Why would it cost you more to build one?? We built my buddies 90 350 for a little under $700 I think he gave $150 for the motor before he had the machine work done. So we'll say $850 hell, you could have bought a hole truck for that.

Don't get me wrong I wish I had $3300 to put into a motor. I would go BIG BLOCK:D:D

I used to run a zz4 gm crate motor in a chevelle and it ripped. I beat the crap out of it and it held up fine, even at close to 8000 rpm. Although later I did pop a couple of valve springs

You should go check the specs on that motor before you compare the two. I think you will see the differences. Also, I doubt that the one you and your buddy built has a 3yr/36k warranty.

I got 500Hp and 450 lbs. of Torque in my $3,000 383 motor. As for the warranty if it's "built" right you shouldn't have to worry....But I know not every one has the abilty/hook ups to do a quality rebuild.....so each his own......

Why couldn't I build one cheaper? First because I am not an engine builder. Second I had nothing to start with. I do have many friends however that are engine builders, and in their opinion you can't beat that price for what you are getting. The only thing in that picture that was not included in the price was the headers.

Oh yeah the warranty is nice too. I don't care how skilled of builder you are there is always the possibility of a part failing.

What if it's not built right? then YOU do have to worry but he don't. Crate motors are far better than building your own. I've built lots of 350's and can't finish one for the price of a crate motor. My last motor had $1800 just in machine work. I could have bought a 250 horse 350 for $500 less than that. Warranties are definitly the way to go, but building one is oh so much fun. Good quality time w/ the kiddos too.

I don't have problems with my rebuilds. I CAN beat the "crate" price and take satifaction of "building" it myself. My current 383 can hold 9K no sweat....As for the kids....don't have any......:D (that I know of)......like I said "to each his own"....
