I really don't want to jump on the "Doug's an idiot" bandwagon and I usually don't even get involved in this shit. But come awn, Doug. Are you actually going to defend the safety of shooting a pistol across a lake that has people all around it??
WTF do you mean that what they were doing wasn't THAT dangerous? How do you define the level of safety when doing stoopid shit with firearms? It only takes one mistake to take a persons life and is it really worth it to take the chance that you could hurt or kill someone?
You are either safe or unsafe when it comes to firearms and that shit is fawking unsafe!! Think about it.
UZI 9mm 07-07-2003, 04:33 PM why do people go to nice peaceful camping/fishing places where others are enjoying canoeing etc. and then drink and shoot guns:confused:
I love to shoot as much as anybody, but I'm afraid the frikkin noise alone would severely irritate me.(aside from being worried about getting shot by drunken idiots)
Ya, that's my favourite thing, to go out of town for peace and quiet, only to hear gunfire echoing off a lake's surface:rolleyes:
Keith Strong 07-07-2003, 04:34 PM Hey Doug......you camp about a mile or so down from me and I will shoot my 45 auto up in the air and you can tell me how what I am doing is not THAT dangerous  Consider me #12......or wherever we are in the number of people that think you are a fuckin idiot

How do you ever know if the other side of the lake is empty? What, you drive over there, check for peeps, then drive back? How do you know that someone doesn't come along while you're on your way back to the other side. You don't. A life is just not worth taking that kind of a stupid chance on. Always follow proper safety precautions when handling/firing a firearm, Always.
Anyone ever tell you to treat any firearm as if it is loaded? Same concept in my book.

i will bet you big money it won't make it over 400 yards. i have tried to hit stuff at 200 meters with a 45 auto, hell i was aiming 20' over the back stop and it was still falling short.
ecrist 07-07-2003, 04:44 PM It is never, ever, safe to use water as a backdrop. A bullet can ricochet off water and just keep on truckin'. The only way to be sure you are shooting in a safe direction is to shoot into something that will stop the bullet. Like a big hill. People like you fawking scare me.....all I can say is that I'm glad you don't live in Arizona although there are plenty of idiots with guns here as well. Take a CCW or safe shooting class and bring this topic up and I guarantee the instructor will set you straight.

No, that's not what I said at all. I was just saying that I grew up shotting stuff over my own lake. However, I never left my shit, and I never did it with anyone around. I had thought that they took their stuff out. Either way, what they did was wrong.

AGGIE_04 07-07-2003, 07:35 PM I still want to know why no one stopped them if they thought it was that dangerous? I agree its stupid, but you have to accept some of the responsibility if you don't do anything about it.
PBRme 07-07-2003, 08:04 PM So we got two different arguments going here...
1. Guys shooting firearms in semi populated area, without paying much attention, and drinking...not the smartest thing...though you can probably go through a drive-through liquor and gun store in Tx and then go play william tell, that is your deal.
2. Guys not respecting everyone's right to use land, lakes, and the ability to keep the area clean. Doug, I am sure that you have seen what a 12 ga does to a can. They may have picked up some of the stuff, but there is no way they got everything.
It is all about keeping it safe and clean so everyone can enjoy what they want to do. Old Scout wanted to canoe with his nephew. I know that when I go out in State forests, I don't want to get shot by some drunk who is shooting trap with cans. People get injured all the time by gunowners who don't pay attention. Being from TX, you should be a huge proponent of the right to own and carry. Do you think that we are going to continue to be able to carry if people continue to get shot by drunks in the woods?
Rant over...:flipoff2:
Berzerker 07-07-2003, 09:57 PM Wow I didn't think people that stupid existed, but I guess you learn something new everyday
Rocktoyo 07-08-2003, 04:38 AM Seems to me it was pretty dumb. Afterall, all it takes is one stupid incident to change the way EVERYONE is allowed to use public land. Not going over and talkin to the dipshits wasn't too bright either IMHO.

0ILBURNER 07-08-2003, 06:50 AM This is just another example of how drinking + guns is a bad idea.
In Tennessee I am fairly sure that firearms of any type are not allowed in camping areas. Not clear if the lake area where those folks were shooting is a 'campground' or just a place that lots of people like to camp, but a little common sense should have kept those guys from shooting there. (see opening comment)
Did no one think to call a ranger? (Sorry, I didn't read through all the garbage to see what happened)

Telling a bunch of guys drinking beer and shooting guns to stop what they are doing is like telling a bear to quit knawing on your leg. It ain't gonna happen, and at best, you might get a couple of shots your way.
The funny thing about this whole thing (besides Doug) is that the guys actually took the time to think, "Hey, I want to shoot my gun at some cans over the water, so let me tie this piece of string to it so we don't loose them in the water" Yet they completely disregard that there are people within range of the guns. On one hand they were being eco-smart and not trying to litter, but on the other they were being COMPLETE morons when they actually went to shoot.
Just goes to show, we don't have all the stupid people in the country right here in Texas, only a handful....maybe a couple....okay a few thousand.....:flipoff2:

Maybe they should have sent someone over there to stand watch to make sure no one walked into the "downrange" area. He could also let the shooters know if their rounds were making it across:rolleyes:

1) they were drinking while using firearms
2) they were littering (cans in the lake, lead, etc.)
3) they were NOT using their firearms safely. (what was their backdrop? bet they couldn't remember if you asked them)
4) They were NOT respecting the campers around them.

quaking in your boots? Not quite. More thinking what is the proper thing to do. I thought it's a legal mater with Placer County Sheriff and the USFS and that gathering evidence for the proper authorities to handle it would be the smart thing to do.
So you would rather had me unpack my Browning and go make a show of power to the drunken idiots? Does your chrystal ball show that the outcome ? No Chrystal ball?

Doug K 07-08-2003, 03:09 PM Actually... Saddam Hussein may have "wanted to be like" Vito Corleone... but he didn't model his leadership style at all... The Godfather exhibited leadership in a very rare way... and frankly HE wasn't known for being ruthless as much as his cronies... I don't admire the violence, but the way in which he sought respect through reason and logic... his way was the only way.

Old Scout 07-08-2003, 03:11 PM If the drunks didn't have respect for the ~25 campers around the lake, what makes you think they would find respect for a army of one asking them to stop there illegal activities?
Your giving them far too much credit for being intelligent.
Doug K 07-08-2003, 03:18 PM I think you fear them too much... the less intelligent the easier to "steer"...
If you are going to be upset about an indiviual or group's actions then be prepared to change those actions.
I would have walked over and in a nice tone introduced myself... explained that my neophyte was with me, and that I didn't really want to go out on the water with firearms being discharged oer the lake... would they mind going somewhere else or at least stopping. I guarantee that they would have heeded my request... I am not scary... I am convincing. All it takes is a little reason.
If you're not prepared to do this, but wish to hide behind the badge of law enforcement then you should quietly call the cops and have them take care of it... file your complaint, but don't bad mouth these guys over the net if you wouldn't handle it like a man to thei faces. That sir, is what we in Texas call... Chickenshit.

Doug K 07-08-2003, 03:30 PM I have been wrong in these threads before, but I assume that it was 250-300 yards away and off to the side of the shooters.

Old Scout 07-08-2003, 03:36 PM But I didn't happen in TEXASS
How does one call the cops from a lake at 7800ft and 20 miles from the nearest phone. It would of taken over and hour and 20 minutes to reach said phone.
My post was to see just what EEZMARK's response was to his actions. You turned it into a pissing match.
Take a little time to reflect on the reception of your views by the +60 other members of this board. You have a unpopular view on things and yet you still want to argue a matter that you know little about. Because you weren't there! It called talking out of your ASS here. What do you call it in texas?
You seem think that the texas way is the right way, with total disregard that there many be regional differences in the way matters are handled. Fine I'm a chicken shit in Texas, I could careless.

I wouldn't have sent in an 'army' to start shit by any means, but sounds like there were 25 other campers that were fearful to even stand up for their own safety. Reasonable requests for safety have always been honored whenever I've asked.
Doug K 07-08-2003, 03:39 PM I wouldn't have called the cops if they could have been there in 2 minutes...
The regional differences you speak of are why California has an energy crisis... why you have higher crime rates.. and why you haven't established a fiscal budget for the year and it's alreayd started...
Thank you very much...but California could stand to learn a few things from us Texans.

WOW I could agree more. Gray Davis is a complete moron. I have been a Republican my whole life. I joined the Young Republicans my sophomore year of High School, two years before I could vote.
I was a Mcgovern tombstone for halloween when I was 11!

STFU dumbass.
Travis Waldher 07-08-2003, 03:56 PM Whatever Doug.. you see.. you weren't there.. Just like you weren't there at memorial.
In our case at memorial weekend, people DID talk to them, I missed out during the day to talk to them since I was out wheeling. Otherwise I would have personally. (there were more gunshots and a woman screeming so I have been told.)
That got us NO WHERE. The drunk assholes shooting the guns still shot guns after the talk.
The ONLY reason they stopped was repeated visits from the police, and I assume the police telling them to leave, because they left early.
Otherwise.. if it was legal for me to eliminate the problem people permanently, I would have and felt good about it. There were others in camp that felt the same way. Waking up at 6am telling my now wife, go back to sleep it was only semi-automatic fire, and none of it hit our camper is NOT the way people should have to deal with camping.
Talking only gets you so far... when it fails, or when you KNOW it will fail. It's time to take the next step, unfortunately that's law deforcement. Hopefully FOTR helps to string the asshats up.
Doug.. your either part of the solution or part of the problem. Right now, your part of the problem.
The shooters were irresponsible and inconsiderate.
Pretty stupid to be shooting without a decent backdrop, excluding the shotgun for obvious reasons.
Even more stupid to be shooting high velocity rounds that close to the water.
Drinking and shooting is beyond reprehensible, especially so, since there are numerous people in various directions around the shooters.
DougK I can't believe you are defending these tools.
The actual laws and common sense rules they broke are numerous.
At first you didn't appear to be a responsible gun owner but with each new post it becomes more and more obvious that you are having a lot of trouble admitting your position is wrong.
Why can't you see how that?considering how many people disagree with you?

OK. I hate agreeing with you on anything, but, fortunately I can agree with you on one point here, but disagree on another. I would be upset if anyone were discharging a firearm anywhere near a public lake that I wanted to be on, or that others were on. I would also be upset if they were discharging a firearm without a proper backstop.
But, from 70-80 yards, how did you know they were drunk, or that the shooter was drunk. The cans could have been from the night before. They were *responsible* enough to tie strings to the cans so they could retrieve them. The pcs they blasted off and left to sink the the water are still a problem. But, they seemed to be pretty accurate from all the holes in the cans, so I am curious why you thought they were drunk.
I don't recall you saying you saw them chugging beer while shooting, but you might have. As I said, I went to review the other thread, but it is gone. Did you see the shooter drinking, do you know he was drunk, or did you assume he was drunk, and how did you know one way or the other....?
If the cans were empty before they started shooting, how did they get them to fly so far, especially with a string attached? Could the cans have been full of beer when they were tossed up?
In short, were they drunk? How did you know?

I was the the beach two hours earlier and there were no cans. There were 11 un-shot 16oz cans and remnants of 4-6 cans on the beach after they left. Just a guess, but 18 pacs of silver bullets are populararound here. So is 72oz of beer enough to be a drunk? Had they had a few before hand? Who knows/cares.
Lets try not to over analyze the situation.
!. They were drinking.
2. They were breaking the law and common knowledge of gun safety with there location.
3. It was rude as fawk to take over the use of an entire lake when a half mile up the trail is this:

Maximum effective range 460 meters " 2,653 m
(maximum)
460 m
(effective)
So, you are saying a 22 rifle has an effective deadly velocity distance of over 10k feet, while an M16 only has an effective range of a little over 1400'? The maximum range of this M16 is only 7,959'. Your little .22 is ranged at over 10k'
That is quite a rifle....
Perhaps you should review some information on weapons. Here is a good comparison chart
http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2002/DomnaAntoniadis.shtml
Maximum Range of Ammunition Caliber Weight/Type Muzzle Velocity
(ft/s) Maximum Range
(yd) Velocity at Impact
(ft/s)
.22 Long Rifle 40 gr RN 1255 2000 300
.223 Remington 55 gr SP BT 3240 3875 545
30-06 Springfield 180 gr SP BT 2700 5675 800
9mm Luger 124 gr RN 1120 2400 350
45 ACP 230 gr RN 850 1800 330
44 Magnum 240 gr FP 1760 2500 350
This chart tells me the maximum range of a .22 is 2000 yards, or a little over 6000'. A far cry from 2 miles. And that is not effective range, it is maximum range....
What kind of .22 rifle goes 2 miles? It is very impressive....

Hey now, you call me on every dot, period, tittle, or jot that I make in my posts, so you can expect the same when you post. If you don't like it, you can either get over it, or you can take your own advice and not over analyze every statement anyone makes so as to point out all the flaws of their statements, comments etc. You are the worst culprit of over analyzing and nailing folks on inaccuracies, even when folks are admittedly *discussing* or *exporling* an issue for the sake of education!!
You called them drunks, and that was used as fodder to fan the flames of disgruntlement. You have no idea if they were drunk or not. They could very well have brought their empties along after chugging them the night before.
Whether they were drunk or not has no bearing on the issue. Stone, cold sober, they should not have used the lake as a backdrop for their target practice. But, don't clutter up a good argument with misleading assumptions, just to try and further your point. Or, if you are going to make generalizations, either have supporting information, or get off your ivory tower and quit ragging anyone else who happens to mispost something at sometime in their life.

Lil Uzi 07-08-2003, 08:49 PM Got back from my 2nd trip on the Con June 30th. I dont know if the trail will be around or open much longer. Call it what you will. I doubt my son will see the trail the way we users and abusers have been able to enjoy it. Shooting across any water is against the law in California (not a shotgun). Fuck you all to hell. Do not come travel these trails. Stay home, drink and shoot in your own living room. Piss all over and shit in little piles .......... What a fucking dump full of morons. Does anyone act like this in their own house ? Around their own families ? Anywhere ? In Kali or Comi fornia ? Texas ? Eat shit and die. Fuck you all to hell. Is my point clear ?
MikeW 07-08-2003, 09:12 PM My analysis of the situation:
This is a incident that
A) :rainbow: Treehuggers
B) Whining Donkeys (Democraps)
C) Some government agencies
D) Anti-Motorized groups etc.
All of these different groups would definitely use this to their advantage. I mean this is ammunition for them.
It even takes one or two dumb fawks to ruin everything for us.

larryboy 07-08-2003, 09:39 PM i think alot of this bickering is a regional thing. here in cali people are running the rat race and ready to snap,i wouldn't approach a shooter with one beer can in that situation in cali. put me in eastern oregon(or texas, never been there) and i would try to talk sense to someone, doubtful this would happen in areas of the country where people are raised up properly with respect for firearms and neighbors. its not a question of manhood to keep from getting plugged full of holes for nothing.

Because when confronted with reason...most people...even drunk careless people see the light.
People shooting in camp? Tell them to stop... people shooting across the lake... don't take pictures like a fucking pussy, be a man and walk over and ask them to stop... People drunk and fucking in public and warping your small childs mind? asking them to stop fucking... JESUS, how hard is it?
For the record you will NOT see me doing this kind of shit in public... dog me for being dumb and a stupid Texan... I really don't think these guys were being THAT dangerous... make it into a mountain if you must, but ask them politely to stop...explain the situation and it will end.
I am so tired of the "you're an idiot" bullshit... grow some nuts... and next time you see me tell me how much of an "Idiot" you think I am... for that matter we'll even discuss the issue... anybody who has taken me up on it to date has seen that I'm not everything they have made me out to be on a fucking BBS.

No shit! Doug while I do not agree with your view on the situation, I agree with this statement.
