alright my old 80 luv has a one piece 4speed/transfer case. My owners manual says the tranny takes 80w and the t-case takes 30w (but they are one unit so this confuses me). And the haynes manual says it takes 30w period. Could someone shed some light on this?

My guess is that Haynes is just wrong. Yes, the tranny/tcase are a single unit, but they are divided inside and there is a seal keeping their guts from mixing.

Later 5-speeds do use 30w in both tranny and tcase, which may explain why haynes says what it does.

Bottom line, go by your owners manual and/or a *factory* shop manual (Helm) over haynes or chilton's every time.

theres only one drain plug and one fill plug, and my factory shop manual says the same thing the owners manual does. Im guessing it means use 30w in 4x4 trannies and 80w in non 4x4 trannies?
