Hi
I just got a 72 series III (maybe a IIA ?) Thanks to thoes who answerd my engine/driveline options.
Now any idea on replacing the steering wheel? with somthing less busslike?
And can a RHD be changed to a LHD without majior difficulty?
and not lastly can the seat bases/bulkhead be removed without compremising structual integrety ? I need extra room and comfy seats or a diet and I have wrenches that work unlike diets<laugh>.
Thanks

Try www.bcboffroad.com they do conversions/mods on series rovers. Unless its slipping out of gear, no need to mess with the trans if you are just going to tear it out later . . . As for axles, you can put anything in there you want given some time, depending on what you plan to do with it one might be better than another. There are upgrades for the stock axles or you can run a salsbury or ENV for more strength. If its just a street rig, you probably wont need to put the effort into swapping in non-rover axles.

A '72 (as you have already guessed) will either be an early SIII or the very last of the IIA's (depends how long it took the US market to get the new model).
If it is an early SIII, then you have probably the worst series gearbox LR made (early SIII gearboxes weren't very strong), however if it is a 109" you should have a Salisbury rear axle (same as a Dana 60) - which is a bonus.
However, a loose gearshift might simply be a loose grub screw in the aluminium housing the selector ball moves in, or soft/broken detent springs. either of these are easy to fix (but you need to remove the floor - you will get used to removing the floor panels...)
If you have a rover diff front and rear then Toyota centres (3rd's/pumpkins in US speak) will fit (with a lot of machining and fab work) but you need to get custom axles made, and machine (and fit bushes to) your swivel housings (big balls inboard of front wheels) to fit either rover or Toy CV joints (in place of the original UJ's).
Good Luck...
