i am in the process of converting to "mass air efi" on my 302. i ordered a extreem 4X4 cam for a small block ford from a catalog and the paperwork states it is for a 351W. the question i have is will this work in a 302 and will i have to reverse the firing order.

thanks in advance

thats the firing order you want - the sefi mass air has the same firing order as the 351W

Thanks a bunch. since the firing order is cool i realized that the most important part would be when the injectors fired and that is controled by the ecu. my ecu is from a 90 mustang HO so it should also be correct for the late 5.0 and windsor firing order. is this also correct or do i still have more to worry about?

sounds like your in good shape - the 90 HO is a mass air system so it should work well.

only other question I would have is if the cam is for a roller or non roller block? You most likely have a non-roller (pre-'86 I think) since your refereing to it as a 302 - if the cam is a roller cam, you can get roller lifters that work in a non-roller block, they are made by crane and cost around $300.

That is the cam you want. I did the SEFI install without changing the cam out. I just rewired the injectors. It seems to work well for me. Good luck!

the original engine is a 5.0 from an 86 bronco, speed density, with auto tranny, i have pieced together the top end from mustangs with the ECU being from a 90, manifolds from an 89 mustang. i have also pieced together a wiring system from the 86 and an unknown year bronco with MASS AIR. the only part im worried about now: is the ECU compatible with a manual tranny. i do not know what type tranny the mustang had? will this be a problem if the ECU is automatic vice manual? there are different part numbers in the catalog so i can probably figure out what it is that i have, but if it is for an auto can it work in a manual?

The ECU won't care about the tranny. The differences are only the timing curves really. What you have to be careful about is ECU to wiring harness compatibility and the O2 Sensor harness is different for a manual and an automatic. I put the SEFI on a rebuilt 75 302 and a 3 speed manual. The computer I have is for an automatic. Good luck!

I have an update to my replies on SEFI and the firing order issue. I had it setup where the injectors were rewired for the correct order. It seemed to surge on occassion which got me thinking. 1/2 the cylinders are on the wrong side according to the computer. So it is constantly either too rich or too lean. And the computer is having to constantly adjust things. Basically not evey a step up from an open loop system. So I took out the extention that had the injectors rewired and man does it run smooth. HUGE difference. It idles too low now, but I'll adjust that out. My 2 cents...

yeah i been thinking about that, but with the setup i have now i dont think i will have a problem. with the 86 HO it came with the windsor firing order and the wiring harness is from the same year as the ECU 90 i am pretty sure..... also the windsor firing order. we will soon find out, within the next few weeks. my aim is for the hangover run new years day!:rasta:  :barf:

Yeah, as far as I know, all HO motors have the same firing order regardless of year. Good luck on that. Where is the Hang Over Run being held?

its up here in washington, off of hw 2 near stevens pass ski resort. we meet at 06:30 AM and then see who can get the farthest up Iron Goat Road. its a forest service road but covered in snow. there is no helping each other till the winner is declared then we spend the afternoon pulling everyone out from wherever they got stuck at. some are serious but most are just there for the family snow outing and snowball fight.....
