View Full Version : OBD I vs II-when? Very confusing Range Rover sighting

OK fellas, when did Rover go to OBD II on their vehicles?
I was called to assist with a '95 Rangie yesterday and was astounded (astounded I tell you) to find an OBD II port (the mark of the beast), no distributor (Satan's work), and open-knuckle (more of Satan's spawn) CVs. I was under the impression these changes did not take place any earlier than '96 for the GEMS distributor-less ignition, and mid-1999 for the open CVs. I've seen many Discos with swivels and GEMS, but nothing like this Rangie.
My Rangie book (factory workshop manual) does not support my observations.
WTF:confused:
Gots to go, more flood cleanup to do before I can end this "vacation":flipoff2: ask me about my fourth of July wheeling/camping trip:flipoff2: .
Peace,
Paul

well if its got the open knuckle front end i assume youre talking about a 4.0 and not one of the last classics? if so i think that the 4.0/4.6 were all OBDII from the beginning... other models didnt change over until later.

Yeah...gotta agree with Adam...was it a 4.0 with the 2nd gen body style, or a RRC with these peculiar parts?

speaking of p38a's...
has anyone ever looked at the axles under the front of those things?
Just wondering what the uj's and shafts are (i know what the third member is already)...
anyone? anyone?

they use birfs just like the rest of the rover lineup. i know that the axleshafts are 24 spline but i dont know if they vary diameter wise from the standard coil sprung counterparts.
i would pull my mom's front axle apart and tell you, but i dont think she would be too happy :D

birfs? I was under the impression that they were UJ's. Hmm.
They must have some kind of sealed boot to keep the grease in?
Anyone got a pic?

Eggsactly. Very similar to almost any other IFS front end.
I bow before all of you. I thought the model year 1996 was the first for the OBDII. Thanks for enlightening me. I won't tell the vehicle owner of my ignorance:flipoff2:
