i just bought a parts jeep and was told that the frame is a 73 adn the tub is a 76. they weren't bolted together, the tub was just sittin on top (i'm assuming because the body mounts wouldn't have lined up). anyway the tub has a vin tag on the dash just to the left of the steering column. is this a standard location, or would someone have had to move it there? i'm hoping its moved because it has the second digit as a 3 so thats 73 right and that tub won't bolt up to my jeep which means more work for me (o wait thats just more fun) anyways all i wanna know is if the vin tag would normally be on the dash.

o i thought of another question, if you were bending new sheet metal for the floors would u just do a bunch of tac welds or would u do some solid beads? i just dont' know if it wuold be better to make it easy to take out the floorboards by a couple of grindings.

well, on my wrangler, the Vin was mounted to the left of the steering column above the dash like you described. It is actually attached to the windshield assembly I think. AS for welding in new floorboards, sheetmetal will not hold up to welding with a "BEAD." Is it rusted out? Why not fasion some way to bolt new sheet metal or rivet it to the rest of the tub. AS for adapting it to fit to the frame, I gots nothing. if the mounts are far enough apart, perhaps some sort of bracket is in order, but most likely you would have to cut off the body mounts on the frame and weld them in the proper positions for the TUB. OMG wiring is going to be a BITCH. unless your into that sort of thing.

I just welded new floorboards into my 48 2A. I say go with full welds. If you just tack weld the floors in a few places they will most likely break when you get into a flexy situation. I fully welded mine then covered my floors inside and out with a brush on bed liner( was going to do rhino($500.00) or line X($275.00) but it was too much money for me). As for sheet metal not holding up to a bead mine did just fine if thenodnarb cant run a bead on sheetmetal he needs to learn to weld or clean his welding surface better. The best method is to sand blast the old paint and undercoating off after you remove the rusted metal. Also sand blast the new sheetmetal(I used the sandblaster at work and my sheet metal came from the roof of an old stationwagon). It is best to use a MIG welder if you have one or can get access to one but if not and you have to use a buzzbox use the lowest amperage and smallest rod you can find and practice first.
